The higher you go from sea the colder and drier it is. Lower you go from sea level the hotter and wetter it is.
The level of water and land across the surface of the Earth is another important control that controls climate. The water temperature will change slower than land. But it takes longer to heat water, and even longer for it to cool down. As a result, places near the oceans experience milder changes in climate.
