FEMINIST THEORY: THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG

Examine the roles female characters tend to follow. How do the feminist movements affect viewers' opinions and do they eventually convey a favourable or unfavourable impression of feminist ideas?

The use of stereotypes in 'The Princess And The Frog' displays the expectations women are set to follow regardless what activity they take part in

CHARACTERS

DOMESTICITY

TIANA

She is an individual who was taught to cook from such a young age, as she was in her young-adult year she was still occupied in something related to food

This make its look like she is being taught to cook at a young age, because her life would be revolved in the kitchen, this shows that female should known how to cook in their ears of being a child-young adult

This relates to the stereotype that female are for the kitchen and that is a needed skill

DICTION

"‘The quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach" - This shows that for a women find a man and to make and keep him happy, the only ay is through his somtch and coincidently Tiana is proving food to Charlotte father at this time, which shows as an example how happy he gets , which is shown through his facial expression

This shows that it is important for female im todays society to know that that is not the only way to make a man happy, there are many females in todays society who may not have the necessary skills

EUDORA (TIANAS MOTHER)

In the scene Tiana is seen sweeping the floors and in the process of beginning her which emphasizes how as a female she is expected to be cleaning with the natural belief of being home swell

That barrier should be broken in women feeling like they are obligated to do all the cooking and the work at home. In todays society it should be clear that when it comes to the work in the house, there should be some kind go equality and agreement, because some. tend to feel low about themselves if they aren't able to do everything like cooking, cleaning, etc.

Alongside through a stereotype said by her mother, where hs his speaking about how Tiana needs to find her 'Prince Charming' - this shows that Tianas money wants her to find a Prince Charming in order for her to stop working so hard

That barrier should be broken in the manner of feeling obligated to find an individual that a women needs to depend on, women in todays society shouldn't feel like they are capable of being independent and still be able to succeed

SCENE ANGLES

MALE GAZE

CLOSE UP

MEDIUM SHOT

Moment on the bus where Tiana was going to work, this Male individual was admiring her and tried to give her a flower in exchange for her beauty

As someone who looks so young, pure and innocent, the male in the community are going after her

This shows that it is important in todays society to be aware of those around you, there are people who come with different purposes, so this shows how you must be cautious, especially when your mindset is one way, someone else can be extremely impacting

PAN MOVEMENT

This is where the male in the bus had tried to give her the flower, through pan it showed the exaggeration in how he had gotten down to give it to her

AGING & APPEARENCE

TECHNICAL CODES

SYMBOLIC CODES

COSTUME

She had fallen back from Mr. Fenner, she flew were she was not looked at too 'elegant' because she had for stains all over her clothing,

When she went to change, she changed into another blue, sparking (glitter) dress, which made her look sophisticated and like an elegant and put together female

This shows how when she had 'stains' on her clothing, they viewed her as not so women-like (no elegance), so in todays society that shows that women need to look 'elegant' like to be viewed inna. positive manner

FACIAL EXPRESSION

When she realizes Prince Naveen was late, her crying and facial expression showed how dependent she was on him attending

Once Prince Naveen arrived, her facial expression were exaggerated where she was overly happy and excited to see him

This shows that when women do not get the attention they want from males, then that affects their emotions negatively, in todays society that makes women seem like they need to depend on males for emotional support and for that validation in their time

LONG SHOT

CLOSE UP

When Prince Naveen got to the banquet, she walks down and taking the spotlight by showing off her makeup and her big pink dress

LITERARY LENS

DICTION

Through her choice of words, she emphasized how she ahas been waiting for Prince Naveen to catch her attention - it was a long-awaited moment

When comparing how both of their views and perspective had changed over time is shown through diction

Tiana is an individual who was independent and was against love and the thought of males was not sitting in here head

When she was older and looked mature and older that is when she started to get the attention of males in the movie - either in the bus or in the blue dress scene

This shows how in society female perspectives tend to change overtime, and this is something all dependent on ones experience, and how their mindset it - depending on what and who someone surrounds themselves with, can either impact them positively or negatively

The lesson from this would be to be careful with what you listen to and who you listen to, in this scene it was some what beneficial for Tiana to listen to her mother and start that love life - although for other people this advice may not be too beneficial

What stereotypes of women do you find? Are they oversimplified, demeaning, weak, foolish, excessively naïve, untrue? (ex. are all blondes dumb?)

The movements in the movie are portrayed to be negative - even with Tiana trying to show her independent, bold and strong skills

SOUND

MALE GAZE

“Where the women are very pretty and all the men deliver”

When we see that this male has this flower sitting in his coat in that manner where he has easy access to it and is able to pull it out within that moment, it makes it seem as though this male went outside and was expecting to see such an individual like Tiana.

It looks like he is admiring her for her physical traits since there is no other evidence of him ever speaking or approaching such a girl like Tiana, so in the angle he is viewing her it gives us an understanding of in what manner his approach was.

This shows that in todays society women are looked and viewed / admired for their looks and how they come off

All depending on a man's/ males mindset and perspective

Women now in todays society actually care the most about their physical body parts and that is what males are attracted to

That is a major stereotype that needs to be changed, because this perspective on women through physical traits had become super evident, that has women to change themselves

We need to change that view on females, women hould stop treating their bodies like objects, when making transformation ofr the satifaction of men

“That's all I want for you sweetheart, to meet your prince Charming and dance off into your happily ever after”

Through the use of fiction in this set scene it shows how stereotypical it is for women to be viewed to be given to someone looked at to be a ‘prince charming’.

FACIAL EXPRESSION - Her mother was furious prior to this because Tiana was showing how she wanted to be an independent individual and how all she cared about was working hard to get to a good point in life

This shows how mothers also have this want for their daughters to find some Prince Charming because they have this belief that their daughters must get married

It may seem like marriagee is important and for some people, things come to them at a certain time in life

This shows that mothers should not be too pushy towards their daughters about finding someone because this effects ones independent life on them becoming successful and then being told to depend on someone else

TECHNICAL CODES

LONG SHOT & PAN

The scene towards the beginning of the movie shows the elegance expectation of women - since it is at the begining of t he movie it sets the atmosphere in expectations

SYMBOLIC CODES

FACIAL EXPRESSION

When Charlotte sees the dresses - she begins to beg

Through Charlotte begging for such clothing it also emphasizes how girls have these big closets filled with clothing and the setting in this is a whole display of their clothing

Some females may feel less of themselves, so the stereotype of wearing big puffy ad elegant clothings hold be held back - especially In he white community

This shows that this thought of clothing defining a women and how she is, shouldd come to a stop since any female can wear any clothing not be pinpointed for it

HOW WILL THAT CHANGE? ANY TECHNIQUES?

In what ways does The Princess and The Frog embody feminist theories concerning gender norms and power structures?

The movie used various techniques to emphasize how female should be dependent on males

Speaks about certain 'techniques' needed to satisfy a male in society and the expectations some males may have in society

FEMALE DICHOTOMY

TECHNICAL CODES

SOUND

In the beggining of the movie, when we see the characters (protagonists) for the first time we can see how there is this elegant background music playing

This gives a sense of elegance and innocence coming from the two characters

Since the music is reflecting the elegance and innocence that shows how the movie will reflect the females & this proves how female dichotomy works in society

SO WHAT? HOW DO WE CHANGE BETWEEN CHOOSING EITHER OR THROUGH PERSPECTIVES

Perspectives of how males treat women in a public setting

MISOGYNY

LITERARY LENS

DICTION

Through the use of diction he is comparing her chance in having a restaurant to him winning the Kentucky Derby.

Through his comparison it makes it seem like he is trying to state that Tiana is less deserving than him and that she is not going to be capable of her dreams.

Through his use of words it shows this negative attitude which show how he is assuming that women are not capable

Through his comparison he is stating that oney if he succeeds then Tiana would d be able to - the comparison between males and females

It is important for women to feel like they are capable as well, since men tend to take over sometimes it makes it seem like female can't do things unless males are capable

This mindset that makes men think that ut us fine to speak to women in a certain manner and make them feel not worthy needs to come to an end

HOW CAN THIS BE TAIGHT AND POTRAYED?

STEREOTYPES

Finding a 'Prince Charming' is necessary in a female life

“That's all I want for you sweetheart, to meet your prince Charming and dance off into your happily ever after”

This shows that there is this want and urge that is put on females to want a male in their life to support them and to get through life with

There is this stereotype which needs to be held back because these wants and needs are put on the minds of women who feel and want to be independent

This causes a female mindset to be flipped and switched because what they have been believing all these days - their independence turns into dependence

FACIAL EXPRESSION

TECHNICAL CODES

There is a moment in the movie when Tiana is serving food to Charlottes father and during that moment that she is still looked at to be a woman who works in a kitchen.

This connects to how she was raised in the kitchen, and those skills are still impactful on her. Since she was a little kid, she was looked at to be an individual in the kitchen.

This shows that there are many expectations people are expecting in women when it comes to make males feels satisfied

The barrier of women thinking in order for them to make a man happy in todays society is is they cook food, show how stereotypical it is for women to feel like the only choice in happiness food and cooking

Women should not feel any less then themselves perhaps if they did not know how to cook - then assuming they aren't capable of making a man happy

SYMBOLIC CODES

The scene towards the beggingin of remove, Tiana is put in th kitchen, where her father is tasting her gfood that she had cooked

Through the use of facial expression we can see how Tiana needed that validation once she was done stirring her pot, because she wanted to make sure it was tasty.

This shows that women in today society tend to do things to make sure they get the validation and appreciation for things

This should hold women back in always trying to satisfy men, and to do things and have a good mindset for themselves

Just as Tiana is feeling upset at first and then puts a smile on her face - this is how women are when males tend to say something

The opinion of a man should not effect a women as much as it does in todays society

There is a stereotype of female feeling obligated to make a male happy in life through food
