LISTENING

Students can respond to the listening activity by:
1. Doing(physically responding e.g: Stand up, raise your hands, If it’s true raise your left hand…)
2. Choosing(Selecting from multiple options: pictures, objects, texts e.g. Pick the object I am describing)
3. Transferring(drawing/completing a picture e.g. Listen and colourthe animals, Listen and complete the map)
4. Answering questions (Both explicit and implicit meaning e.g. Listen and answer using one or two words)
5. Summarizing(taking notes on a long aural piece e.g. Listen and list what the person is doing next holidays)
6. Speaking(engaging in conversations e.g. Debates, discussions, dialogues)

Extensive listening:Teacher encourages students to choose what they want to listen.
●Highly motivational for students.
●Usually takes place outside the classroom.

Strategies: we need to teach the following strategies explicitly:
1.Using prior knowledge / make connections.
2.Using selective attention

3.Using non verbal cues for meaning

4.Determining importance ( key words)

5.Identifying purpose of communication

6.Identifying the speakers’ intentions and emotions/feelings.

7.Interacting and responding

8.Using graphic organizers

Intensive listening:The use of audio material (CDs, Mp3 players, etc).
●For students to practiselistening skills.
●Usually takes place in the classroom.
