Rainforest

Location

r

There are many rainforests located on earth including the Amazon Rainforest, (located in South America), the Congo Rainforest, (located in Central Africa), Daintree Rainforest, (located in Australia), the Southeast Asian Rainforest, (located in Southeast Asia), and much more (Rinkesh, 2017). Rainforests are located in South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

Biotic Features

r

Animal SpeciesSince it is estimated that there are many plants, animals, and insects that may need to be found still, this can prove that there is a large variety of these species (ActiveWild, 2018).Plant SpeciesA hectare of rainforest can have as many as 800 tree species and 1,500 of large plant species.  Tree species include, "the tonka bean wood, teak, rubber and several species of evergreens and palm trees."  Other plant spices found in rainforests include various "fungi, shrubs, herbs, woody vines, lichens and mosses" (Editors, 2017).Insect SpeciesIn the rainforest biome, there can be as much as 42,000 different insect species in one hectare of rainforest.  In the rainforest, the insect species include, "beetles, arachnids, scorpions, praying mantises, katydids, weaver ants, bullet ants, butterflies, centipedes, cockroaches, jeweled caterpillars, wasps and bees" (Editors, 2017).

Abiotic Features

r

PrecipitationIt is estimated that 50 to 300 inches of rain falls in the rainforest biome each year. In many rainforests, there is a "wet season" - where there is a period of heavier rainfall. In the temperate rainforests, precipitation can form as snow in higher elevations (Dilthey, 2018).ClimateRainforest temperatures vary depending on where the location of the rainforest is. Rainforests can see temperatures between 20oC and 36oC. Some rainforests (temperate rainforests), can reach lower temperatures, and have the same biotic features.SunlightIn the rainforest biome, there is very little sunlight that makes its way to the floor of the biome.

Human Population

r

There are approximately 50,000,000 people who live in the rainforests.  These tribal people depend on the rainforest for food and shelter (Caltech, 2018).

Natural Resources

r

Many natural resources we use every day can be found in the rainforest, such as:RubberOilsOil is often located in rainforests.  Oil is often extracted from the ground and used for vehicles (Sciencing, 2017).WaxesflavoringsdyesWoodWood from the rainforest is often used for ship building, furniture, paper, flooring, and other items (Sciencing, 2017).MedicineMany plants in the rainforest are used for medicine to cure diseases, such as Rosy Periwinkle.FoodMany fruits and grains grow in rainforests (Physical Science, 2018).

Ecological Threats

r

DeforestationDue to the world population growth, rainforests are being clear cut to reach the demand for timber production.  Since there is a high demand for timber, as much as 6% of the world's land is now rainforest, as opposed to 15% before deforestation took place. Unfortunately, land that has been clear cut will not recover to it's original state. Also, when a large tree is cut down, such as a 35 metre tree, as many as 17 smaller trees are destroyed when the larger tree falls. The loss of trees can severely affect the climate.ClimateTrees absorb carbon dioxide, and if they are cut down, all that carbon will be stuck in the atmosphere. Also, since many rainforests are deliberately burned to clear the land, it emits large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and raises the earth's temperature. Deforestation is responsible for more GHG emissions than all global planes, trains and other vehicles combined (Young People's Trust for the Environment, 2014).

Temperate Deciduous Forest

Location

r

The Temperate Deciduous Forest biome is located mainly in Eastern North America, Europe, and west Asia (NatureWorks, 2018).

Characteristics

Biotic Features

r

PlantsIn Temperate Deciduous forests, there are 3 levels of plant life - the first level being the forest floor, includes moss, lichens, wildflowers, and other small plants.  The second level includes shrubs, and the third level includes hardwood trees, such as oak, maple, birch, and magnolia.  Spruce or pine trees can be mixed with hardwoods.  The Taiga can sometimes overlap with Temperate Deciduous Forests (Nature Works, 2018).AnimalsThere is a variety of wildlife in the Temperate Deciduous Forest.  There are many insects such as caterpillars and carpenter bees., birds, such as Jays, Robins, Owls, and Woodpeckers, turtles, snakes, raccoons, skunks, deer, and moose.  Many of these animals migrate to southern regions to avoid the cold (Sciencing, 2018).

Abiotic Features

r

TemperatureIn the Temperate Deciduous Forest, there are four distinct seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each season has different temperatures.WaterNothing would be able to survive without water.  Plants and animals rely on water to survive.  In slow-moving waters, algae can form and block sunlight out and harm the microorganisms.  It rains a lot in the Deciduous forests to keep the soil
