Business Etiquettes

Do wear formal clothing to meetings or work. Mexicans are known to have a polished and professional appearance.

Suit and tie for men, and conservative dresses for women.

Women should always wear make-up.

Do exchange business cards either at the end of the meeting or during introductions.

Negotiations move slowly. Be patient. For Mexicans, the building of a personal relationship comes before the building of a professional one.

Don't show signs of discomfort, which would be considered rude.

Don't leave the table immediately after you are finished eating.

Do learn a little Spanish as Mexicans tend to appreciate the gesture of the other party being interested in their culture.

Foreign businesswomen should not invite Mexican businessmen to dinner unless their spouses also come along.

Showing up late is highly acceptable in Mexico as thirty minutes past the scheduled meeting time is considered punctual by Mexicans.

Verbal communication

Do not use words like “No”, or “I don’t know”, as saying these straightforwardly gives a sense of betrayal and rudeness to Mexicans.
