Structure

Form

Form: Refers to the shape, appearance, or configuration of something, whether it is a physical object, a piece of artwork, or a design.

Materials

concrete

Concrete is a popular material for many construction applications, and it is widely used because of its strength, durability, reflectivity, and versatility.

It's important because, It resists erosion, fire, rotting, rusting, and weathering with relative ease, requiring minimal maintenance and repair. Ergo, concrete boasts a lifespan that exceeds many other types of building material.

wood

Wood structures are strong, durable and resilient. Wood can be used to build striking features like roofs, ceilings, walls and bridges, resulting in visually-appealing structures.

It's important because, Wood structures are strong, durable, and resilient. They can be designed to resist major earthquakes and hurricane-like winds. Wood building materials are also good for the environment.

steel

Has thermal expansion coefficient and is strong and relatively cost-effective. Reinforced concrete is also used to provide deep foundations and basements and is currently the world's primary building material.

It's important because, less steel is needed in a single support or beam, reducing material costs and improving its sustainable nature. It can withstand strong physical impacts and forces, keeping building occupants safe, but won't wear away or need to be replaced afterwards.

Design

Symmetry

If two or more parts of a figure are identical after folding or flipping, to be symmetrical the two halves of a shape must be of same shape and size

Balance

Channelling the load—the entire weight of the bridge structure—onto the posts, which are the supports that run the length of the bridge, and the posts, which are the supports at either end of the bridge.

Sustainability

Sustainability is when a structure can last a long time. Sustainability is important because structures need to be able to last a long time, so that they actually have use. Like, your house needs to be sustainable because people live in it.

Function

The structure of a house protects and contains the people and its contents. A natural structure is one that is found in nature, for example, a termite mound. The structure protects and contains the termites. A structure needs to be stable, so it does not fall over.

Why are structures important to humans?

They're important because the civilizations we live in are all made up of structures, and structures are needed so that we have a place to sleep, work, and live, and they provide so many benefits to the human life.

Types of structures

Shell structure

Characterized by a curved, shell-like form. shell structures derive their strength primarily from their form itself.

Fram structure

A framed structure in any material is one that is made stable by a skeleton that is able to stand by not depending on floors or walls to resist deformation. It's made out of beams

Solid structure

A solid structure is strong, relying on solid construction materials to support loads. Examples of solid structure: Dams, bridges, granite and literate rocks, mountains, door.
