States Of Matter

Gas

Properties of Gas:
-no definite volume
-no definite gas
-can flow
-can be compressed

Liquid

Properties of Liquid:
-definite volume
-definite shape
-cannot be compressed

Solid

Properties of Solid:
-definite volume
-takes on the shape of container
-can flow

How to calculate density:
D=M/V

Metal Expansion
When you leave a metal ruler out in the hot day the ruler eould expand by 1mm or so, because the particles inside the metal ruler start heating up and bunping into other particles causing the metal ruler to expand.

When taking away heat and energy from a liquid the bonds get even stronger and the particles have no where to move and the liquid turns into a solid this process is called 'condensation'

When adding heat to a solid the particles vibrate and get more energy so the bonds weaken and then the solid turns into a liquid. This is called the process of 'melting'

When adding heat to a liquid the particles get even more energy and some particles seperate from the rest of the particles and then the liquid turns into a gas, this process is called 'evaporation'.

The temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid when cooled this is called 'the freezing point'.

The temperature at which a given solid will melt this is called 'the melting point'.

The temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapour this is called 'the boiling point'.
