Substitution
Technology that Replaces
Using an iPad to take a picture or for apps to replace math manipulatives such as dice, tangrams, and geoboards.
Using a smartboard as a larger monitor.
Using the internet to access information
Augmentation
Technology that Replaces and Improves
Using a smarboard for built in tools and lessons.
Using the PicCollage app to create student work with pictures, labelstext and stickers/decoration
Using digital stories, rather than physical books, that include options to read text aloud or define text.
Modification
Technology that Redesigns
Using an iPad app, such as Google Keep, for pedagogical documentation. Use an app to take a picture and have the student record their thinking to document their learning.
Using Google Slides to create a slideshow for a lesson. The teacher can incorporate text, images, audio, video and links to online content in order to create a new learning experience.
Using iMovie to create a class play of a familiar story or using Book Creator to create a class book. These completed works can be shared with the class, families and other students.
Redefinition
Technology that Creates Something New
Using Google Classroom for online learning. For starters, this platform and elearning suite of applications can be used to create lessons, share information, and teach online through video conferencing.
Would creating a class blog/website be considered technology that is redifinition? This would be something students were involved with and used as a means to share information, pictures, to share their learning and ask questions.
Knowledge
Content
Familiarity with subject matter and curriculum expectations
Fortunately, I have been teaching Kindergarten for many years. So I've spent many years learning the curriculum, taking PD and courses for Kindergarten and becoming very familiar with the material.
Pedagogy
Familiarity with teaching strategies and students' needs
I have been teaching for a long enough time that I have developed extensive knowledge of teaching strategies and methods. Making connections with students is a priority of mine and essential for our young learners. Fostering these relationships helps me to understand students' needs and interests.
Technology
Familiarity with tools and applications
I have become fairly comfortable using technological tools or devices and all things Google. However, I am less familiar with many educational applications such as online educational websites and apps. I often use technology to support my teaching in terms of planning, presentation, students records (observations and data) and sharing information. Using technology in the classroom helps to engage students and allow for a variety of learning experiences. I would like to improve my integration of technology for student use.
