Evidence#1: "My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Non-violence is the means of realizing Him”
Mahatma Gandhi is known for his non violence throughout the world. He has never resorted to violence under any circumstances.
The British salt act of 1882 stopped Indians form importing or exporting salt without paying a heap of tax.The salt march in 1930 led by Mahatma Gandhi changed this though by sparking the acts of civil disobedience against British salt laws by millions of Indians, in which 80,000 were jailed.Mahatma Gandhi however did not fight back he just kept marching forward like a symbol of peace.
Evidence#1:“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you and then you win.” It’s very tough to lead the independence of India movement of such a big country and with non violence against the British army.Gandhi was fought against and beaten a lot, left alone lying on the ground bleeding people said he wouldn't see another day but he resisted and kept going.
Evidence#2:Mahatma Gandhi went to South Africa as a representative for trading in Durban. As he got there he felt a lot of discrimination against the people of colour in South Africa and decided to stand up for racial oppression.A law was about to be enforced which stated “disqualifying voters who were not of European origin” however Gandhi became the leader of the Indian community and opposed the bill. Due to his valiant persistent efforts the bill was stopped temporarily though it passed in 1896.
Connection text to text:Mahatma Gandhi's Resistance and Persistence reminds me of a book we read in the beginning of the course called “when the crayons quit.” In the book a bunch of crayons got angry at Duncan their owner because he was mistreating some of them. They resisted and persisted him by sending him different letters from each crayon. The resistance was the letter itself while the persistence was the amount of letters they sent 1 for each crayon. Now this can’t be what Mahatma Gandhi was going through when he resisted and persisted but there are some differences and similarities.Differences such as reality vs fiction, location and cause(what they are fighting for).Similarities such as both fighting for a cause and nonviolence.
Evidence#2:“An eye for an eye would soon make the whole world blind.”
In this quote Gandhi was implying how if everyone took revenge no one would be safe, so instead forgive and forget.
Connection text to world:Mahatma Gandhi's Non violence against anything reminds me of a few leaders. However, the first that comes to mind is Martin Luther King since I did a SOP on him I know what actions he has taken in the past. The connection I am making from both leaders is non violence but to take it in dept I will be talking about two cases. These cases show how Martin Luther King and Gandhi are non violent.Gandhi's case of non violence is the salt march and Martin Luther King’s case is the I have a dream speech. In Gandhi's case he showed non violence by not fighting back while he was marching and being beaten by Britain. In Martin Luther King’s case he never fought back in his speech he never talked bad about other races, he just talked about how the African American community was being treated by other races. Both these cases connect because in both the leaders were non violent and still put out an inspiring action for others.
