How does sound work?

Sound is produced when something vibrates.

The vibrating thing causes the space (air) around it to vibrate

r

The speed of sound is influenced by what it travels through and the factors affecting what is travels through. For example, altitude, humidity and temperature might affect sound waves traveling through the air.

These vibrations are called waves

r

Mechanical vibrations that are able to travel through all forms of matter: gases, liquids, solids, and plasmas.

We hear sounds when the vibrating waves enter our ears

Parts of Sound

wavelength

distance between waves

amplitude

r

Amplitude is acoustic energyAmplitude is intensityAmplitude is volume

frequency

how often waves occur

r

Higher frequency sounds (waves that occur more often) produce higher sounds.Lower frequency sounds (waves that occur less often) produce lower sounds.
