The Fall of the House of Usher

My opinion

I liked this plot because it is connected not only with people, but also with the house of Ushers. It is depicted to be alive, as the protagonist of the book. And at the end, the reader learns that the whole plot is connected with this house. I am interested in such ideas, they are unexpected and make the end of a story be unexpected.

How does this work reflect the characteristics of the literary period in which the story was created

This story shows us a work of Gothic fiction which includes themes of madness, family isolation, and metaphysical identities. It also represents a psychological study of terror and passion for tranquility, because Ushers are fearful. The character (Roderick Usher) is sure that he is destined for some strange fate. The characters during the plot become mad and frightened to death. Settings are dark with strange sounds.

Plot summary

The story begins with the unnamed narrator arriving at the house of his friend, Roderick Usher, who complains of an illness and asks for his help. As he arrives, the narrator notices a thin crack extending from roof, down the front of the house. The narrator learns that his friend painfully perceives bright lights, loud sounds, bright colors. In fact, his whole life is imbued with fear. Roderick is also sure that there is some kind of force nesting in his house. The narrator learns that Roderick's sister, Lady Madeline, his only close person, is also ill: she is indifferent to everything and sometimes her body stiffens and her breathing stops. Roderick believes that his house is alive and his fate is connected to the family mansion. Usher layer informs the narrator that Madeline has died. Roderick insists that she be entombed for 2 weeks in the family tomb located in the house before being buried. The narrator helps his friend. Over the next week they find themselves increasingly agitated. A storm begins and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom in an almost hysterical state. They hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. Finally, Usher declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister who was in fact alive when she was entombed. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline. She attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator runs from the house and sees that the House of Usher splits in 2 and the fragments sink away into the lake.
