There is a cat on a mat. (Wikipedia, 2021). This is an example of correspondence truth because it can only be true if somewhere within the world, there is a cat, and a mat. (Wikipedia, 2021). if anything in the statement were missing, like the cat, the mat, or the relationship between the two objects were missing, than the statement would be considered false. Correspondence truth is about the knowledge of objects, therefore things can only be true if the objects follow the same set of beliefs that we have. and if the objects are out of sequence with your statement, or one of the objects is missing, the statement becomes false.
Another example of Correspondence would be saying that the snow is white which is true. (Marian, 2020). we all agree that the snow is white because we know what white is, and we can see the snow with our own eyes, it is objective truth that is widely agreed upon. It would not be true if we say that the snow is being white. (Marian, 2020). This would be false because snow is not a being, and therefore cannot exhibit properties of a living entity. (Marian, 2020). Snow exists, and we all agree on that. therefore it is widely accepted as truth that the snow is white. we have objective knowledge of snow as an object, ad white as a color. these things were taught to us by people who may believe a completely different set of truths, but we all agree that snow exists, and it is white. therefore the statement 'snow is white' becomes a widely accepted truth within society.
An example of the theory of pragmatism would be the belief that the ocean is beautiful. (Spacey, 2019). This concept will allow a statement or belief to be true even if it is not widely accepted. (Spacey, 2019). Pragmatists believe that truth will emerge through interaction with the world. Therefore, it does not matter to a pragmatist that beauty may be a human construct. (Spacey, 2019). All that matters is that thinking of the ocean as beautiful allows a deeper understanding and interaction with the ocean and beauty. (Spacey, 2019). true belief of truth that the ocean is beautiful will only come from individuals interaction with the ocean. Then after they have truly seen the ocean, that person can make the truth that the ocean is beautiful. I am a large believer in interaction and urther truth. I believe that things can be true, but i your mind, they cannot be fully believed or true to yourself if you have not interacted with the truth. I also believe that things can be true even if others do not believe they re true. In previous units, we learned that reality and some truth is very subjective. therefore based on my indivudal viewpoint and expereinces in the world, I may have a different idea on truth and fiction than others who have not shared ini my same experiences.
An example of the Pragmatism Theory of Truth is the word 'bear'. (Philosophy. 2018). No Body ever decided that the name for a large furry creature with big teeth and a powerful body would be 'bear'. (Philosophy. 2018). The word just created itself because people found that this word was useful to warn others of the dangerous creature surrounding you. (Philosophy. 2018). When the word originated, people found it useful in order to help their survival in the wild. (Philosophy. 2018). there is no essential meaning for the syllables in the word bear, but it was a word that improved humans survival rates, ad therefore thrive and keep living their lives. The point of truth is to help humans further understand and success in our world. life is very hard, and much of it has not been lived through or discovered. therefore believing in something because of how useful it is to society allows human beings as a whole to approach our full success, and live longer and happier lives.
Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. (Encyclopedia of Philosophy. 2021.) This is true because it has been tested and proven by science. However; it is also incorrect because water at sea level may boil at 100 degrees, which is what has been tested and known. (Encyclopedia of Philosophy. 2021.) But water at higher altitudes and levels may have a higher boiling point due to the change in conditions and environment. (Encyclopedia of Philosophy. 2021.) When looking at sea level water, everyone can agree that it boils at 100 degrees Celsius without creating conflict or a contradiction. (Encyclopedia of Philosophy. 2021.). Therefore, this is true because society has agreed on which water is used for the statement and what we believe to be 100 degrees Celsius. These are all thing that fit into our societal beliefs, and therefore we can all agree n them and it becomes known as truth. I have noticed that I believe many things that society tells me is true. I may not have proper evidence to support the truth, but since many other people believe its true, I will follow the trends and also believe in the truth of the statement or fact.
An example of the Coherence Theory of Truth within daily lives would be a person believing that they are going to pass their exam tomorrow. (Olsson, 2017). the person will look at their previous beliefs and events to evaluate before assuming this truth. they will look at their previous marks and they can examine how prepared they are to take the exam. (Olsson, 2017). The assumption that the previous statement about passing the exam can be logically incorporated into the individuals beliefs. (Olsson, 2017). If they had done well on all their assessments previously, and they feel very prepared to take the exam. Believing that they will pass the exam is a very logical thought that follows along with their previous beliefs. When making an assumption, I will also look at previous beliefs or situations that will help me believe in the truth of the assumption I am making. I may go around in a circle and only believe things to support my assumption, which doesnt fully prove the truth of my statement, but it justifies, and makes me feel better about the situation I am in, and how I can find a way to assume my success or create a truth in my favor.
