What is pollution?

It is the introduction of substances into the environment that are unpleasant or harmful to people,animals,plants and buildings.

What are the effects and extents of water pollution?

poisoning and contamination of waterways

harmful to marine life and water birds

stop oxygen from entering water thus killing marine life

eutrophication

poisonous to humans

affecting the fishing industry

loss of money to clean up beaches

lose tourist attraction

Causes of water pollution

Untreated sewerage let out into rivers

Industrial waste(toxic or otherwise) discharged into water ways

oil and chemical spills

excess fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides end up in rivers

How does it occur?

It occurs when pollutants are discharged directly into water bodies such as rivers,lakes and seas.

It also occurs when pollutants on land are blown by the wind or washed by the rain into water bodies.
