FNMI Families

Family functions

Socialization of children
Traditionally children would be educated by the elders and cared for by the women. the children would interact with each other in games and spiritually developing activities just as today. However today children must also attend school and other modern accommodations.

Physical maintenance
Before Europeans and modern way of living food and supply's would be gathered and provided by the men in the kinship. Women were known as the home fire and would tend to cooking the food and tending to the sick.

Love and nurturance
The elders of the tribe were responsible for teaching the children how to live and support the community. the whole shape and structure of traditional FNMI kinship is built completely around people being connected supporting and nurturing each other.

Production of goods and services
Before the settlers came everything that would be used to build homes, clothes, food, weapons etc. would have to be gathered or hunted for. these things are still required today but not quite to the same extent due to modern stores and trading.

Social control
Traditionally children would be guided by the elders of the community and complete rights of passage to move to the next stage of adolescence and take their place in the kinship. Nowadays social control would be closer to the way it is done in our homes with the parents setting rules and regulations in their households.

Addition of members
Members were added through procreation but then adopted into the kinship way of community.

Family form

FNMI family's are in a form known as kinship which are based off a network of closely related people with individual identity and responsibilities.

Roles in the family

The role of the elders was to teach and the children. the role of the women was known at the home fire and they tended to the households and the elders. Next the men were tasked as warriors, providers and protectors of everyone else.

History of the family

FNMI family's were originally a system of close knit people that cared fore and nurtured each other but with the introduction of the Indian act and residential school system their way of family and life was shattered. the same and abuse that was taught to the children for being Indian was passed on from generation to generation and will forever effect the FNMI community.

Reasons for change

Before European settlers came there were no reasons for change that were apparent. Everyone had their roles in the community that helped the others. Knowledge and nurturance was spread in abundance thorough the whole community. However after the settlers came and destroyed their whose way of life many problems arose. During the children's time at the residential schools they were heavily abused sexually, physically and mentally, They were taught shame for who they were and to forget their culture. all of this unattended trauma and abuse passed from generation to generation causing family's in later years to fall apart because of substance abuse and actual abuse especially to women and children.

Historical family

Family functions

Socialization of children
The mother would most likely be responsible for teaching the daughters how to be a woman in society and the fathers would usually be responsible for the boys. School however was not legally mandatory so not nearly as much interaction happened compared to modern or FNMI family's.

Physical maintenance
The father was always in charge of bringing in money for the family and the mother always stayed at home and tended to the kids, food and cleaning.

Love and nurturance
As far as todays standards there was not nearly as much love or nurturance in the household. punishment was much more harsh due to the lack of laws regarding it leading to many physically and emotionally abusive households.

Production of goods and services
A man would be responsible for work outside of the house and would usually have a more physical job or a blue collar job. Around this time was the beginning of the industrial revolution so majority of jobs would be on the production line or related to production of goods.

Social control
Parents (usually the mothers) would put in place guidelines for their children just as today,

Addition of members
The addition of members was almost exclusively through procreation with rare cases of adoption.

Family form

Family's were almost exclusively nuclear families due to laws restricting things such as divorce, same sex marriage or inter racial couples.

Roles in the family

The man was always the one with the job and brought in money for the family.
The mother or women were responsible for cooking, cleaning and taking care of the home and children.

History of the family

Because of racist views families were almost always of the same race and very few divorces happened because the man was the only one who could file for divorce. For a long time same sex couples and marriages were illegal and when found would be treated as criminals.

Reasons for change

The old way of thinking has many reasons for change, such as major racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. the amount of inequality is unbelievable.
