Social Media Terms and Concepts

Platforms- Websites where users can post and interact with each other.

Gives users a voice.

Each platform can be used for different things.

One way people can use their platform is through social activism. This involves making their audience aware of certain issues either pertaining to the audience, or around the world.

For example, I've linked 16 year old Greta Thunberg's Twitter account to this subtopic. Thunberg is a social activist who has used her platform to bring awareness to the ongoing climate crisis.

A starting point for a user to build their following and speak their mind.

A person can have multiple platforms they go back and forth on.

Communication- How we interact with each other through social media.

We can now communicate rapidly with our peers through social media.

This can happen anywhere, at anytime, and with anyone.

We can interact either through visual or textual conversations.

How we talk with each other can vary from site to site.

Sociality- The way in which people associate with each other to form social relations and societies.

The ability to build and maintain a brand.

Network with potential business partners.

Form friend groups through different applications and websites.

How reading someone's bio can determine whether or not someone wants to associate themselves with you.

Connection- Social media gives us a connection to people like we've never had before.

Makes people feel like they are apart of something.

Instant messaging lets us communicate with anyone, at any time, at lightening speed.

The use of Facetime, which gives us the ability to have face-to-face conversations with people anywhere in the world.

Can be used to unite certain groups of people together. I.e, political views, movie fans, or crossword enthusiasts.

Progression- Moving forward in technology and social media.

Newer more advanced technologies allow us to do different things.

New developments in social media gives the user a chance at a new experience.

This brings in new communication skills.

Which makes us improve as a society.
