Europe in 1900

Emperors and kings of six countries (Britain
Franc,Russia,Italy,Germany and Austria-Hungary) ruled
most of Europe.

They were very suspicious of each other so they formed
alliances.

Britain,France and Russia formed the alliance known as
the Triple Entente.

Germany,Austria-Hungary and Italy
made up the alliance known as the Central Powers.

If an alliance was attacked an other member agreed
to come to its aid.

Germany was building up its army and navy
threatening the stability of Europe.

Events in 1914

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was Heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary.In 1914 he was assassinated in Serbia by a nationalist of that country.

This chain of events sparked Europe into World
War 1.

Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.Russia
came to aid Serbia.Germany then declared war on
Russia and France.Britain declared war on Germany.
