FOOD AND NUTRITION

BURNS
-Turn the handles of cookware inward on a range
-Follow the manufactures instructions
-Store oils away from stove
-Use thick pot-holders when handling hot pans
-Open lids like a shield, to protect against boiling, hot steam
BUMPS AND BRUISES
-Keep cupboards and drawers closed
-Only carry what you can hold, don't pick up too many things at once
-Be aware of who and what is around you
-Announce where you are to partners if you are passing close to them
ELECTROCUTION
-Keep electrical appliances away from water.
-Use completely dry hands when operating electrical appliances
-Keep cords safe, away from wet or hot areas and not hanging
-Never grasp the cord, use the plug to unplug from the outlet
-Unplug any electrical appliance before removing the food
CROSS CONTAMINATION- PURCHASING AND STORING FOOD
-Separate raw meat and seafood away from other groceries
-Place meat on bottom shelf's and in separate bags to prevent the 'juices' from leaking
-Separate raw meat and seafood in bags different then other groceries, especially produce
CUTS
KNIVES
-Use a sharp knife, it's safer than a dull knife
-Use an acrylic cutting board, and cut food away from your body
-If the knife falls, jump back and let it drop
-Wash and store knives and other sharp objects, separately from other utensils.
-Only use a knife for it's intended purpose (cutting)
BROKEN GLASS
-Immediately sweep any broken glass into a dustpan immediately
-Wipe the area with several layers of paper towel to remove glass chips and shards
-Place broken glass and damp paper towels in a paper bag and place the bag in a trash container
SLIPS AND FALLS
-Clean up any and all spills immediately
-Use ladders or stools to reach high objects
-Mark any wet areas
-Get rid of any tripping hazards, such as rugs
-Continuously sweeping and mopping
FIRES
Tie back long hair
-Avoid leaving the kitchen while cooking
-Have a smoke detector near the kitchen
-Put a lid or baking sheet on gas fires
- Wear short or tight-fitted clothing while cooking
-Keep any and all fire extinguishers near different exits
CROSS CONTAMINATION- PREPARING FOOD
-Wash hands throughout throughout the process
-Wash cutting bards, dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water
-Always use a clean plate
-Use one cutting board for produce and for meat, if it's possible
-Once cutting boards are hard to clean or become excessively, get rid of them and get a new one
