responisble gouvement
Here in Canada, we have a responsible government where we don't have the fear of someone coming into our house and violating our property without a warrant or such. In the book, we see that in Iran during this time they did not have a responsible government where the government actions had the citizens' best interest at heart. Many Countries with more liberal views also provide different sorts of extra support systems such as women's shelter or welfare for people who don't have jobs. Another example of Freedom that was not given and Iran was the freedom to be innocent until proven guilty. They were not allowed lawyers or anyone to justify their actions or even a trial in court, since there was not much freedom of expression when they did say something that went against the law or their religion they were punished by death or torture. In the book, we saw many different ways that the Iranian government abused their citizens when they disobeyed the law, whether that was preaching for more freedom, rights or voicing an opinion that was against the Islamic revolution. In the article below we see that to this day women's rights are still very restricted in Iran. It also talks about how unjust it is that when people go against the government's word they are at risk of being thrown in jail. https://www.hrw.org/news/2015/10/28/womens-rights-iran#
aeducation
Education is one of the most valuable and important things human needs. In many Western countries, there have been many laws implemented that a child has to go to a certain level of Education before deciding if they would like to continue. These laws at least build the foundation of a child's education and help them understand more the way the world works and how to build a life for themselves. It has been statistically proven that places with greater education have lower poverty rates because of their education and ability to get jobs.Iran:Canada:We can see that there's a huge drop in between primary and secondary school for iran and this is one of the reasons why many don't get jobs there. Unlike Canada where there is more of a stable education and jobs are easier to get.https://datatopics.worldbank.org/education/country/iran,-islamic-rep.
adhijab
The hijab is an Islamic symbol of modesty that many Muslim women wear as a sign of their loyalty to God. In Persepolis, we see that the government of Iran forces women to wear this even if they do not fully believe in the religion. In marganes school we see the Young women being told that they have to wear the hijab Starting a young age and not to question why, most of these young girls may not even know the true religious meaning behind the cloth fabric. later on in the book we see margene's true political views on the hijab and she later talks about how it was unjust for them to force the female citizens of Iran to wear it. There was a very famous talk show host in Pakistan named Qandeel Baloach 2016 she was killed by her brother due to something called “honour killing” because she would wear revealing clothing in a very Muslim religious based country. It was a horrible tragedy and really goes to show the lengths people are going to, to make sure the government laws are invited by.Honour killing is a term used for when male member of the family kills a female member for disgracing the family name or doing something inappropriate against the religion or culture, it has been very commonly found among so many Middle Eastern in South Asian countries. https://www.npr.org/2019/09/27/765066546/brother-of-slain-pakistani-social-media-star-gets-life-for-her-murder
aclothing
In the story, Marjane is very fond of fashion and western pop culture, she takes interest in different types of music such as "Micheal Jackson". Marjane takes an interest in trying to cooperate with her in taste in music and style in her appearance. Sadly for her in Iran their freedom of expression is very limited, they aren't allowed to wear any sort of sign of western culture as it goes against the Iranian beliefs. During Marjane's adolescent years, her parents took a trip to Turkey, they returned home with many gifts such as music posters, trendy sneakers, and a Michael Jackson pin. All of these objects are very frowned upon in Iran. Marjane made the bold choice to go out into the streets of Iran wearing these western merchandises, knowing very well the consequences they will bring upon her and potentially her family.
speach
Freedom of speech is a very thing for many people. Freedom of speech has allowed many people to have the courage to stand up for what they believe in and make a change in our society. For example, LGBTQ + parade end speeches have had an immense impact on the community. with the right to freedom of speech end protest, the LGBTQ + community was able to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005 in Canada. This just goes to show how far the power of speech can take you. In Iran and many other countries, freedom of speech is not allowed. We see in the book that the Next Generation children were taught with very restricted values and we're always to told never to question anything. they never had the chance to be able to speak with an open and free mind. Another good example of a leader who used their freedom of speech to provide change to the world is Gandhi. can use his freedom of expression and speech to lead India into independence and away from British rule, though his actions came with great consequences and he did spend a portion of his life in jail, he made a hugely successful and positive impact on the world especially for his people and Future Generations that would be thankful for his bravery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Canadahttps://www.npr.org/2019/09/29/764698947/gandhi-is-an-object-of-intense-debate-a-biographer-reflects-on-the-indian-leader
aSafety
Safety is a basic human need. In Persepolis, we see that many of the citizens and civilians who live in Iran lack this need. In the war happening in Iran during this time many people were unsafe even in the comfort of their own homes. Marin the book we saw that Marjane's neighbour Baba Levy and his family suffered a horrible death due to a bombing occurring in their house. merge and was greatly affected by this incident as it was a real eye-opener for her to see just the reality of how dangerous the war was. This event that occurred in the book reminded me of a book called Zlata's Diary. This book was a journal that a young girl kept with her during a war happening in her home in Sarajevo. This one specific journal entry where she wrote about a bombing that happened near her house where her entire streets got destroyed and she lost her very close friend due to the damage. Many children in the world have and still do live in a constant state of fear and uncertainty due to Wars. Growing up in that environment of the war built Marjane into being a very strong character and making her identify as a survivor. As of right now, Half of the Syrian children have already been exposed to violence and War. many children have died or been severely injured due to the damage the war has done to their country. “Every 8-year-old in Syria has been growing up amidst danger, destruction and death,” This was a quote from the article attached below. multiple young children in Syria have lived horrific childhoods with many facing obstacles such as Marjane did. The article also talks about how multiple families have been struggling to find food water and warmth in the winter due to the living conditions the war and poverty have caused. these are terrible circumstances for children to grow up in.https://www.unicef.org/press-releases/half-syrias-children-have-grown-only-seeing-violence-conflict-nears-eight-year-mark
Economical Financial issues
In Persepolis we see that the government has a very fine hold on the Iranians, they try to control most aspects of their lives, including Financial. Marjane was very lucky to live in the house with some sort of financial stability, she was raised middle class and had stable providers for the home. Many people do not have the same chance she was given, especially in underdeveloped countries.
