Introduction

What is it?

-Introduction of substance into the environment such that it results in unpleasant or damaging effects on the people and environment.

-occurs when pollutants are directly discharged into water bodies such as rivers, lakes and seas.

-occurs when pollutants on land are blown by winds or washed by rain into water bodies.

Causes

Improper disposal of waste:

-Domestic waste:

-if sewage not treated before discharged into water bodies, they will get polluted.

-Human waste:

-toxic chemicals----detergents, shampoos

-waste produced by industries in manufacturing stage.

-harmful as it contains large amounts of toxic chemicals.

-waste disposed directly into rivers and seas causing heavy pollution.

Effects

Endangering plant and animal species

-layer of oil spreads over the sea, sticks to seabird's feathers when they come into contact with it

-removes air

Sewage, non-biodegradable, oil spills

What is sewage?

solid or liquid waste produced by households or industries.

-treated at sewage treatment plants to remove the waste product from the water before its relesed into water bodies.

What is non-biodegradable?

-substances that cannot be easily broken down into harmless substances.

-usually found in chemical products: detergents, plastic products

What is an oil spill?

-oil is spilt into the sea

-very difficult to clean up oil spill

-spreads over large areas and not easily cleanable

Causes of oil spills?

-accidents of large oil tankers at sea

-oil tanker torn by sharp rocks
