You can use bar codes for several things for example:

Announcements, articles, Comercial tracking, News, etc.

As mush as this is not new information, QR codes combine simple creation with easy access to QR code readers.

The downsides would probably be the fact that not many people are aware of QR codes and how do they work so they wouldn't be able to use it properly.
