Fun with Magnets

Handling and storing of magnets.

Uses of magnets

They are used to hold objects like stickers , refrigerator doors, pins etc.

They are used to separate discarded iron and steel objects from other non-magnetic wastes.

They are used for making compasses.

They are used in telephones, hair driers, door bells, mixer-grinder,fans,washing machine, television sets, tape recorders, electric motors, generators and various types of toys.

magnetic & non-magnetic materials

materials which are attracted by magnets are called magnetic material. Ex iron, steel, nickel and cobalt

magnetic objects are ones made from iron and steel.

Magnetic materials can be converted into magnets.

Materials , not attracted by magnets are called non-magnetic materials.

Non-magnetic materials can not be converted into magnets.

most of the things around us are non-magnetic.

The pull of magnets can pass through non-magnetic materials

Making your own magnets.

Stroking method- where an iron bar is stroked repeatedly by one pole of a bar magnet in the same direction.

Magnets can be made by using electricity, they are called Electromagnets.

Electromagnets are very useful as their magnetism can be switched on and off. When electric current is switched on they behave like magnets. When the electric current is switched off they loose their magnetism.

Properties of magnets.

A freely suspended magnet always points in the north - south direction. This is called the directional property of magnets.

Like poles repel and unlike poles attract each other.

the directional property of magnets is used to find directions at unknown places.

the compass is an instrument used to find the directions at a place.

The differently painted end of a compass needle is its north pole and it is always pointed towards the north direction.

The directional property of a magnet is due to our planet earth behaving as a giant bar magnet buried at its center.

Poles of magnets

The region of the magnets where the attraction of the magnet is maximum os called a POLE.

the two poles of a magnet are near its free ends.

One pole of the magnet is called north pole and the other south pole.

every magnet big or small has a north pole and a south pole. It is impossible to have a magnet having only one pole.

The same type of magnetic poles are called LIKE poles, and different types of magnetic poles are called unlike poles. A north pole and a south poles are called UNLIKE poles
