From where do cultural conflicts originate?
Where Personal Space
is Intruded Upon
One example is mosques being built in tiny European villages, replacing the little space the villagers have with
towering buildings. The villagers do not dislike the Islam religion, but they do dislike the mosques that are invading their space (Traynor).
Areas of Mixed Culture
In Indonesia, Christian-Muslim fighting has lead to physical and emotional turmoil. Not only did thousands of innocent people die, but hundreds of thousands have lost their homes as well (Jones).
Communities That Are Split Between Religions
Islam and Christianity in Africa are both popular religions, creating major conflict. The entire continent of Africa has been divided into the South (Christians dominate) and North (Muslims dominate). The line where these two regions meet is where the majority of clashes occur (PewResearchCenter).
Where There Are Strict Rules
An 11 year old Muslim girl was suspended from public school for refusing to remove her head scarf, which violated school dress code policies. There was much controversy over whether the school should make an exception since it was a matter of religion, or keep enforcing their rules (Pauline's School Uniform and Dress Code).
Areas of Two or More Dominant Races
Though many years ago, the conflict between the black and white races through slavery is one of the most prevalent examples. Whites believed they were superior to blacks, so a huge conflict was created in the form of a war between the North and South. Even though slavery has been abolished, racism and discrimination against race is still apparent today (Civil War Trust).
