What do the numbers mean on a bag of fertilizer?
All fertilizers need these numbers to indicate how much of a certain substance is. The first number indicates he amount of nitrogen (N). The second number indicates the amount of phosphate (P2O5) and the last number indicates the amount of potash (K2O).
Are fertilizers necessary?
No fertilizers are not necessary. Because they are used to help grow a plant, they are not needed to help grow healthy plants.
What is it, how does it help a plant?
Fertilizers are food for plants, they are composed of four main substances, Nitrogen, phosphate, potassium and sulphur. Plants need 17 essential nutrients to grow and survive, fertilizers are used after each harvest to replenish these nutrients back to the soil.
When is it helpful to use fertilizer?
Fertilizing at the beginning of spring will help keep the natural cycle of the plant, if you fertilize in fall it will confuse the plants but realistically, if your plants do not endure winter then it should not be a problem. If your plant is not growing effectively, then you can use fertilizer then as well.
Is fertilizer harmful to the environment?
Fertilizers typically contain methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and nitrogen, which are all great contributors to greenhouse gasses which can be harmful to the environment. This can lead to global warming if not properly addressed.
