Globalization
Positives
We can share advancements around the world
When there is a new invention or discovery, it's shared with the rest of the world and improves society as a whole
Archaeological findings help humanity as a whole to find out more about our history
Strengthens alliances between countries
An increase in communication across world leaders makes alliances easier to form
All countries are important to humanity, and certain countries have resources others may need and vice versa, which makes alliances important to keep
Gives us the ability to consume products from all over the world
Some products such as fruit and vegetables are not grown locally and need to be imported
Products are sometimes much more advanced in other countries, such as Korean skincare and it has become very popular in Western countries as well
Countries that are struggling are more likely to receive jobs and aid
People may move countries for better work opportunities
Sponsoring and donating to people in struggling countries
With social media becoming more and more prevalent, its impossible for those with privilege to turn a blind eye on people that are suffering
Negatives
Globalization can result in a loss of jobs
Trade with developing countries has resulted in a decline for labour in manufacturing, especially among unskilled workers.
This can be easy for unskilled workers to become easily exploited or companies finding better excuses to exploit their unskilled labourers.
More competition
Local businesses in countries could be overthrown by companies who provide the same services but have been introduced to the country.
More employees can apply for jobs in foreign countries, which could take away opportunities from local workers who have worked just as hard.
As technology and AI become more widespread and in demand, companies may lay off workers in exchange for robotics.
Prioritizing AI can lead to a decrease in quality as AI development is still in progression and is proven that AI is starting to become weaker. (e.g, studies proving ChatGPT has gotten slower)
Damage on environment
Deforestation
More forests are being cut down to make way for businesses that meet global needs
Cattle farming is known for having significant affects on the environment due to land usage that is made to inhabit cattle, as well as the greenhouse gas that emits from manure and digestion.
Due to many wildlife being greatly impacted by deforestation, it would cause many ecosystems to be affected. For example, less predators would mean overpopulation of another animal group.
Disadvantage for disabled people
Deforestation harms Indigenous people as many tribes are dependant on forests and other habitats alike for survival
Intentionally displaces them
Contributes to rates of Indigenous people becoming homeless or having to rely on the government now that their homes are gone.
Would remove them from the sources that they benefit on for their survival
Globalization would increase carbon dioxide emissions
This would be caused by coal burning more quickly and fossil fuels usage not being cut down
The burning of fossil fuels is also an outcome of the increase in factories, which is also an affect on economic globalization
Results in climate change, which is severely affecting the Earth
Increase in factories can also lead to more workers being exploited and working in unsafe conditions, pollution, and land being razed over to make way for those factories when the buildings could be build instead such as schools or hospitals.
Seen to be caused by companies using more non-renewable energy sources rather than renewable energy sources.
War
Due to relationships forming between countries economically, war may make countries feel obliged to sell weapons to give weapons to allies.
Canada and Saudi Arabia have remained trading partners. Canada would go on to spend billions of dollars to sell arms to Saudi Arabia which would breach the Arms Trade Treaty.
Saudi airstrikes on Yemen have been concluded to be war crimes and blockades have caused a humanitarian crisis.
Canada has violated intl law
This would also limit a country's sovereignty as they would have to act in accordance with another's standards to not risk any damage to relationships.
Resources taken during war are entirely unethical and are taken under unsafe conditions (e.g, blood diamonds, gold, etc)
Child slavery
Unsafe working conditions
Invading armies/rebels reaping benefits
