Osmolarity

The term Osmolarity is used to define the number of moles of solute per liter of fluid; this describes the total concentration of solute particles, regardless of their chemical identity within a fluid; which is also known as the thermodynamic tendency of water molecules to achieve equivalence across a permeable membrane.

Osmolality can be measured on an analytical instrument called an osmometer. It works on the method of depression of freezing.

Osmotic Activity

A passive process in wich water diffuses across a cell membrane in response to a concentration gradient.

Occurs when one solution, usually lower in conductivity or minerals content, passes through a semi-permeable barrier for the purpose of diluting the concentration of the solution on the other side, usually containing a higher conductivity or minerals content.

Osmolality

The concentration of a solution expressed as the total number of solute particles per kilogram.

Blood osmolality test is also known as a serum osmolality test. Serum is the liquid part of your blood. The serum test is used mainly to evaluate hyponatremia, a below normal level of sodium in the bloodstream.
