Traditional Societies and Bartering - Mind Map

Traditional Societies and Bartering

The Khoikhoi People
- herders (kept animals like goats, cattle and sheep)
- traded livestock for alcohol, copper and beads

The African Bushmen (San People)
- nomadic (moved from place to place hunting wild animals and finding what they needed like water and plants)
- self-sufficient (no need for trade or money)

Bartering
- after staying in an area for a longer period of time, people wanted to trade their surplus products for other products that they needed

Some Problems with Bartering
- It was difficult to determine if the value of one product, which was to be swapped for another product, was of the same value or quantity
- It was difficult to find someone who wanted or was interested in what you had to offer
- It was time-consuming because it was not easy to find someone who had what you needed

Commodity Money
- used in the trading process
- started out as shells and became metallic money when precious metals like gold, silver, bronze and copper were discovered
