David Copperfield

David Copperfield

Main characters: David Copperfield, Betsey Trotwood, Uriah Heep, Dora Spenlow, Agnes Wickfield, Mr. Micawber.

The novel begins with David's birth in 19th-century England and his early years, marked by the death of his father and the cruelty of his stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. David is sent away to work in a warehouse and finds solace in the home of his aunt, Betsey Trotwood, who becomes his guardian. He attends school and befriends James Steerforth, a charismatic but ultimately unreliable friend. As David grows older, he falls in love with Dora Spenlow but faces challenges in their relationship due to Dora's delicate nature. He also encounters the conniving Uriah Heep, who manipulates his way into David's life and threatens his happiness. Despite these challenges, David perseveres and eventually finds love and fulfillment with Agnes Wickfield. Throughout the novel, David's journey is marked by friendship, love, loss, and personal growth, and he overcomes numerous obstacles to find his place in the world. The story culminates with David achieving success as a writer, reflecting on the lessons he has learned and the people who have shaped his life.

A most wonderful book that is absolutely impossible to put down. I liked three things: beautiful language, descriptions of 19th century England, and the plot of the work. The only thing that upset me about the book was the slightly crumpled ending. Over the course of two books, David's life was described almost day by day, and his life from the moment of his wedding with Agnes flew by in about 10 pages, and the book ended. But overall, I can recommend this book to my friends to read.

In the novel Dickens reflected the characteristics of the realism by drawing attention to social problems like injustice, poverty, cruelty and exploitation. He shows inequality in society by depicting various characters, their social classes and living conditions. He also stresses the importance of mutual support and solidarity of society.
