stress in materials - Mind Map

stress in materials

Restoring force/Area

Elasticity:- deformation of material

compressive stress:- if insted of pulling an our material , we push comprees our cylinder we are introducing compressive stress.

Tensile Stress:- it defined as the force divided by the initial surface area. this pulling stress is called tensile stress.

shear stress:- if instead of applying a force perpendicular to the surface, we apply parallel but opposite forces on the two surfaces we are applying a shear stress.

Modulus of rigidity:- it is the ratio of shear stress to shear strain.

G= shear/ stress

Shear Modulus:- it is defined as the ratio of shear stress to the displacement per unit sample length shear strain.

formula= Σ = F/A

Σ = streess(Pa) , F= applied force(N), A= cross sectional area(m*2)

longitudinal shear- a force parallel to the beam axis

Elastic modulus:- it is the ratio of stress below the proportional limit, to the corresponding strain. it is the measure of rigidity and stiffness of material

Hooks Law:- it states that the force needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance.

uses:- it can be used to toughen the materials.
