The History of
Patterns
Throughout
the Grades
Kindergarten to
Grade 5:
We learn about repeating
patterns by using shapes,
numbers, and letters, and
colours.
Example:
A BB A BB A BB
Grade 9 and over:
We will learn about
patterns based on square
roots/perfect squares and
we will start learning
about non-linear graphs.
Example:
4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64
Grade 6 to Grade 8:
We learn about growing
patterns and use
linear graphs to show the
growth of patterns
over time.
Example:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. 13, 15
In 8th grade, we also learn
about linear graphs.
