Catching fire

connections

1 - text to self : pg 179 - 180 “When I wake up, I barely get to the toilet before the white liquor makes its reappearance. It burns Just as much coming up as it did coming down, and tastes twice as bad. I’m trembling and sweaty when I finish vomiting, but at least most of the stuff is out of my system. Enough made it into my bloodstream, though, to result in a pounding headache, parched mouth, and boiling stomach.” this reminds me of a time when I got sick, and vomited a lot, it said that katniss barely got to the toilet in time before she vomited and how after she vomited she is sweaty and trembling. Which is exactly what happened with me multiple time throughout the day I was really sick I barely get to the toilet before vomiting. I was so sick that day that I Just vomit without warning which makes it hard to get to the bathroom in time. Second thing is I hate vomiting because if i'm vomiting it means I have no control over my body and I hate that. And when ever I vomit i Just sit there for a while (trembling and sweaty) before getting up.

2 - text to world : pg 173 “I am going back into the arena” this kind of reminds me when people would take kids from their families and make them go to war. This basically the same people would hope their children would come back alive from was but in the book the odds are not in their favour because only one person is supposed to live.

3 - text to text :pg 55 “We slow slightly and I think we might be coming in for another stop, when a fence rises up before us. Towering at least 35 feet in the air and topped with wicked coils of barbed wire, it makes ours back in District 12 look childish. My eyes quickly inspect the base, which is lined with enormous metal plates. There would be no burrowing under those, no escaping to hunt. Then I see watchtowers, placed evenly apart, manned with armed guards, so out of place among the fields of wild flowers around them.” one time I helped my sister do a book report on a book called (the boy in striped pajamas) and the way district 11 is described is almost the same as the concentration camps are described in (the boy in striped pajamas)

character traits

katniss

personality traits are uniquely strong and prove to be an asset in her fight for survival. These traits are

1 - independence : no one can tell her what to think or how to behave. hunting in the woods illegally, learning how to survive on her own after leaving for the games

2 - responsibility : and loyalty She takes care of her family and friends. This is shown when she finds food for her village, she protects her family since her father died, and when she takes Prim's place in the Hunger Games

3 - Unpredictable : At no time does anyone really know what she is going to do.

peeta

1 - Artistic : he has many paintings. “When Effie finishes, Peeta leads me down a few cars to see his paintings. I don't know what I expected. Larger versions of the flower cookies maybe. But this is something entirely different. Peeta has painted the games.”

2 - Peeta is never violent or vindictive : Peeta is never violent or vindictive, no matter how horrible his situation may be. At one point during the Quarter Quell, Katniss is shocked to see how willingly the tributes kill one another, even though they’ve been friends for years. She thinks how Peeta in the same situation would try to talk to everyone to prevent any violence. “And how long did I take to turn deadly? I shot to kill when i targeted Enobaria and Gloss and Brutus. Peeta would have at least have attempted negotiations first. Seen if some wider alliance was possible.”

setting

The quarter quell arena

1 - impacts the reader : being in the arena where you can't escape and you are forced to play makes the story much more tense for the reader

2 - impacts the plot : without the arena the whole plot won't work for multiple reasons. The arena is a clock without the arena you can't grantee the place is a circle. Second reason in any other place they wouldn't be able to control the weather. Third reason in any other place they can't control the (new danger every hour) or at least it won't be as easily controlled

3 - impacts the character : the arena is forcing the “tributes” to participate because they can't escape. And because they can't escape they have to kill or they will be killed

literary devises

1 - Imagery

pg 179 - 180 “When I wake up, I barely get to the toilet before the white liquor makes its reappearance. It burns Just as much coming up as it did coming down, and tastes twice as bad. I’m trembling and sweaty when I finish vomiting, but at least most of the stuff is out of my system. Enough made it into my bloodstream, though, to result in a pounding headache, parched mouth, and boiling stomach.”

2 - simile

pg 207 “He turns me toward a mirror so that I can take in the entiar effect.I do not see a girl or even a woman, but some unearthly being who looks like she might make her home in the volcano that destroyed so many in haymitch’s Quell”

3 - diction

pg 3 “I clasp the flask between my hands even though the warmth has long since leached into the frozen air” the word choices in this sentence are interesting.

flask : The author chose to use the word flask instead of cup. If you google the definition of flask you will find that a flask is a narrow-necked glass container, typically used in a laboratory to hold reagents or samples however katniss is not in a laboratory but in the woods instead. So maybe the word id suggesting that this whole being the woods illegally thing is like a game or experiment to katniss

theme

In order to survive you must have alliances even if they are temporary

Katniss is well aware of the fact that there will only be one victor of the Hunger Games, but that doesn’t stop her from forming an alliance with fellow competitor such as rue and peeta.

Same in the third quarter quell katniss makes alliances with finnick and mags and (obviously peeta)
This alliance was a temporary alliance is when the worked with (Johanna, beetee and wiress)

all of those alliances helped her live until the end of the hunger games.without some of these alliances katniss might not have won.

conflicts

1 - katniss vs president snow
This is seen from the beginning of the book when president snow comes personally to katniss to talk to her. “...people viewed your little trick with the berries as an act of defiance, not an act of love. And if a girl from District Twelve of all places can defy the Capitol and walk away unharmed, what is to stop them from doing the same?" he says. "What is to prevent, say, an uprising?” so in the quote when it's says a girl from District Twelve of all places. He says that because you find out later in the book that district 12 is the smallest thus making the weakest. “Only you will have to do better if the uprisings are to be averted,” he says. “This tour will be you only chance to turn things around”

2 - all districts vs president snow
The thing with the barbies made the other districts start uprising against the capitol which made the second conflict all districts vs president snow. This is first seen when when they visit district 11. The act of descent. The way it was handled, how seriously it was handled was because they were trying to prevent uprisings.this was the first hint.
