Class Management - Mind Map

Class Management

Management of documents/handouts/etc.

Why is this a problem? As a teacher, you are administering the learning in your class, and with that comes a lot of paper work coming at you in different forms. Keeping organized is vital for paperless management of documents. Having a system and sticking with it will help you, but you need to be diligent about it. Working with an LMS that assists in organizing student work and assessments is vital. This needs to be a conscious effort, and there are apps to support this.

Plagiarism/Copyright

Why is this a problem? The internet has made plagiarism too easy for students. Many students are unclear about when, and how to cite information. Students need clear examples and need to be taught about citation at a young age. Make sure students are aware of the consequences of plagiarism, and have tools and strategies for proper citation. Teachers need to design assignments that encourage academic integrity, which make it difficult to plagiarize.

Flaming/Cyber Bullying

Why is this a problem? Students need to know how to interact with one another, how to treat one another with respect and what not to do online. Students think they can say what they want online with no repercussions and our students need to know how this affects their peers. Mental health is a large concern for many of our boards and addressing cyber bullying is one step towards supporting our students. Supports: Maintain positive relationship with student, define bullying and identify forms of bullying. identify roles in bullying relationships: the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or trusted advocate, the safe adult
identify strategies for addressing bullying.

Completion of Assignments

Internet Safety

Why is this a problem? It is crucial that we teach internet safety as our children are sophisticated web users and are connected to the internet through social platforms and applications that could put your child at risk. Children need to know what kind of information they can share online, and what not to. This can be done at the first step of exposure to the internet, encouraging students to use secure sites and social media safety.

Netiquette

Why is this a problem? Students are using online means of communication as one their primary sources of connecting to peers and friends. Cyber bullying is large problem and teaching students to converse respectfully among their peers is important. The language of online communication is different from formal writing or even oral dialogue. Students need to know how to talk to one another, how to use abbreviations or slang appropriately, how to be polite and concise in our online exchanges. To support early netiquette learning, students need to see how to use proper language, avoid emoticons, careful use of capitals, etc.

Attendance

Why is this a problem? If a teacher is teaching a class remotely or completely online, how is she or he going to mark attendance? How will she/he motivate students to log in and engage with course material? Using an LMS that keeps track of student time spent online is one tool to monitor attendance. Maintaining a positive relationship with your students and parents, setting motivators for work or celebrating goals achieved is one way to motivate students and encourage attendance.

Discipline

Why is this a problem? Identifying undesirable behavior is easy in the classroom as you often see or hear it as it happens in real time. Identifying problems or issues with student behaviour online is a problem, as you cannot address the situation in the moment. Setting clear examples of student expectations, appropriate netiquette, clear and fair consequences might help alleviate discipline issues. Communicating these guidelines with families or guardians is helpful to ensure you are all working on the same page. Teachers need to encourage students to be ethical, and empathetic digital citizens.

Group Work

Why is this a problem? Students all have different preferred ways of showing information and knowledge, and sometimes this means collaborating with others is not one of those methods. Students may not want to work with others or find it difficult to share or work with peers. Teachers needs to establish a safe place for learning, and allow students the space to share their learning without fear of criticism from peers. Teachers need to create platforms for student discussion, and provide students with access to applications that allow for students to work together. Modelling of appropriate netiquette behaviours will also help facilitate this.
