Darwinian Evolution

Darwin's theory of evolution showed that man, the apes and monkies have all evolved from a common ancestor

The Galapagos Islands and how did they help Darwin formulate his ideas on evolution

On this isalnd Drawin saw different finches, where each had its different and unique shape

The animals on this island were uninhabitted by humans i.e. they had no fears towards humans

About Darwin:

He was born on February the 9th 1809

He died on April 19th 1882

H observed that the individual members of a particular species are not identical but can differ in many ways

What is evolution?

Evolution explains that what we see today is different from what existed in the past

Biological evolution is concerned with changes in living things during the history of life on earth.

Darwin called the process of evolutionary change that gives rise to new species "descent with modification".

Natural Selection

is the the process by which new species were brought into existence

Darwin propsed that individuals that have heritable characteristics are more likely to survive and reproduce in their particular enviroment

Evolution show us that species are not immutable but they change overtime through natural selection

Artificial Selection

It is the intentional reproduction of individuals in a population that have desirable traits

It had a marked effect on the form of domesticated plants and animals

Evolution according to Darwin was studied on four scales

Astronomical

Biological

Geological

Chemical

Evoltuion and the process of Science

Observation and description

Explanation (hypothesis)

Test the hypothesis

Species

a group of related organisms that share a more or less distinctive form and are capable of interbreeding and producing an offspring that interbreeds

they arose by common descent, as a result of divergence from a common stock

Evolution is considered science because it is observable and testable

The fossil record

Study of living species

Artificial selection in the laboratory

Genetic mutation

Evolution and religion are incompatible

No one was able to propose a plausible mechanism for how the form of an organism might change from one generation to another

The origin of life is not the main focus of evolutionary theory but rather the way life changes after its origin
