PFA and Domains

PFA

r

Prescribed Focus Areas A student: 5.1   explains how social factors influence the development and acceptance of scientific ideas 5.2   describes the processes that are applied to test and validate models, theories and laws 5.3   evaluates the impact of applications of science on society and the environment 5.4   discusses evidence supporting different viewpoints 5.5   analyses how current research might affect people’s lives

Knowledge

r

Domain:  Knowledge and Understanding 5.10  assesses human impacts on the interaction of biotic and abiotic features of the environment5.11 analyses the impact of human resource use on the biosphere to evaluate methods of conserving, protecting and maintaining Earth’s resources5.12   relates the interactions involved in using some common technologies to their underlying scientific principles

Skills

r

Domain:  Skills 5.13  identifies a problem and independently produces an appropriate investigation plan5.14 undertakes first-hand investigations independently with safety and competence5.15 gathers first-hand data accurately5.16 accesses information from a wide variety of secondary sources5.17 explains trends, patterns and relationships in data and/or information from a variety of sources5.18 selects and uses appropriate forms of communication to present information to an audience5.19 uses critical thinking skills in evaluating information and drawing conclusions5.20 selects and uses appropriate strategies to solve problems5.21 uses creativity and imagination in the analysis of problems and the development of possible solutions5.22 plans, implements and evaluates the effectiveness of a variety of tasks independently and as a team member

Context (Fertile Question)

r

Overview / Rationale:  Humans, depend on the planet for life.  By understanding the life support systems and cycles, and recreation of systems and resource extraction students get to make a choice  on how they are going to react to the future. Outcome: Student produce “Statement of Purpose”  an online record of their view of where the planet is heading, what they have learnt, how it changes this view, what they intend to do.  The record show an number of activities and lesson logs that record their learning. Rationale: It is not authentic to give a young adult a message of need for responsibility and not provide a forum to stake their claim in responsibility.
