Globalization - Mind Map

Globalization

Negative Impacts

Lack of cultural identity
(Abandonment of culture, Independence, Development)

From entertainment to someone's own identity, globalization brings a negative impact upon the idea of cultural identity and also the idea of one "abandoning their own traditions or culture" (also known as losing one's family heritage). In addition, globalization can also influence new content or products to be unauthentic in comparison to the original, which can sometimes paint the wrong picture in some cases.

Example: TV programs are being copied resulting in the authentic version losing meaning or it's own uniqueness

RUNNING MAN (SOUTH KOREAN VER)
Original South Korean variety show that started to air in 2010

RUNNING MAN (CHINESE VER)
Was influenced by South Korea's Running Man and first aired in 2014

Did not gain as much popularity in comparison to the original version, as viewers believed Running Man Korea was much more authentic in comparison to a newer version produced by China. Viewers believed that the idea of copying an already existing version was not creative; also influenced a lot of backlash from the audience.

Example: Westernization of traditional cuisines or food items

PANDA EXPRESS

Panda Express was brought into the market to help provide a new option in the fast-food trend, of easy convenient food but since 1983 when it was first founded the food or menu items lost authenticity to real Chinese recipes.

Security Issues and Regulations
(Impact to the Environment, Risking Social Safety, Politics)

Globalization can also impact security, political and global system or regulations. In addition, globalization can increase risk of transferring diseases between multiple nations or sometimes globally; currently, an example can be the coronavirus which is spread worldwide with over 40,000 cases and "400+ deaths" reported, but government policies in countries like China have strict regulations against media coverage (meaning the true number or news can still be possibly hidden or the current "idea" can be distorted realistically).

Example: Spread of diseases like syphilis (including other diseases such as smallpox, chicken pox, malaria, and also the current coronavirus)

SYPHILIS

CORONAVIRUS

Security risk can also be threatened as a result of globalization such as terrorism and or threats, as today with transportation in this generation travel is much more convenient for people. With the effects of globalization impacting a country or nation facing possible negative impacts such as currency. value fluctuation (economic struggle) can further encourage or build issues and damges to security; similar to a domino effect.

Example: Possession of fire arm and number of registered gun in different countries are significantly different, which also ties in the fact that each country have different regulation or laws against usage of fire arm; connecting back to globalization, it can change the system as certain regulations can go against one another.

South Korea: 510,000 registered guns
United States of America: 300 million registered guns
France: 10 million registered guns as of 2016

Monopoly
(Competition, Social Issues, Exploitation)

It is believed that globalization actually helps to reduce the monopoly power as there are more competitions. However, globalization could cause the other way around. Due to the increase of foreign companies from dominant countries, local or domestic companies are often fail to attract more consumers.

Example: Fast food restaurants in Canada

Branches in Canada: 1396

Branches in Canada:850

Branches in Canada: 384

Positive Impacts

Greater competition

Due to the globalizations, domestic companies of an industry have to compete with international companies in order to survive in the industry. This leads to a company to lower the price of the product and make products in better quality as well as to be more innovative to stand out.

Example: Samsung vs Apple

More and more technologically advanced wireless earbuds are released to attract more customers. After the release of Airpods, Samsung also released its wireless earbuds called Buds. Shortly after, apple came up with airpods pro.

Buds (Samsung)

Airpods

Awarenesses
(Cultural and Society, Social and Ethical Issues)

People used to Idolize the trend of Western countries before. In fact, American culture conquered the world. But thanks to globalization, relatively less dominant countries are getting spotlight of their culture, and trend. Also globalization brings awareness of ethical issues in less dominant countries.

Example: Kpop

KPOP

Not only has KPOP became more visible to the international audience, but also has the food, language and the entire culture of South Korea.

Numbers of tourists in Korea 2010:8.8 M
Numbers of tourists in Korea 2018:15.35 M

Employment & Exploitation
(Job opportunities)

Another positive impact that globalization has is a surplus or increase in job opportunities at the same time also helps decrease the number of issues that are about exploitation. Prominent problems such as human trafficking, cheap labour, and child labour can be reduced.

Example: H&M using child labour

MYANMAR GARMENT FACTORY
"H&M reportedly used garment factories that worked teens for 12-hour shifts" (title of article) H&M created contracts with manufacture factories that violated laws regarding child labor.

Globalization creates less barriers between businesses to countries around the world and also creates transparency on businesses or companies that do use unethical methods to produce their products. As a result, as mentioned before prominent problems such as cheap or child labour can gain awareness because of globalization.

Fewer barriers or in other words more freedom means people will be able to find more employment or there would be an increase in employment opportunities, allowing nations that are struggling to develop (hopefully becoming more sustainable and prosperous)
