Hamlet - Mind Map

Hamlet

Hamlet's Change in Character As a Result of The Conflict He Experiences.

Quote 2: "I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven. O, this is hire and salary, not revenge."(III.iii. 78-80)

Hamlet in this part of the play is struggling with his indecisiveness for killing the king. Before this soliloquy, Hamlet stumbles on Claudius praying alone but decides on not killing him for it would be "Hire and salary, not revenge."(III.iii.80) We see a change in Hamlets character as he shows his humanity by not killing the kind while he is praying.

Quote 1: "To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the stings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them?"(Shakespeare III.i.57-61)

In this quote, Hamlet is in a deep state of melancholy. This is the first major turning point for Hamlet as he realizes that his father has been murdered by the king. He expresses his desire to kill himself to get rid of all of his worries. "To be, or not to be"(III.i.57) This point I in the play sets forth the rest of the internal conflict Hamlet deals with throughout the rest of the play.

Quote 3: "Which is not tomb enough and continent to hide the slain? O, from this time forth, my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!"(IV.iv.63-65)

We see one of Hamlet's final changes in character in this soliloquy. After all of his indecisiveness, Hamlet finally decides to stop thinking about his action and just do. "My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!"(V.iv.63-65) This is a drastic change in his character as he has been struggling with the internal conflict of his morality and killing the king, but finally decides that he has to do what he has to do.
