Phonetics

It is the study of the sounds of speech.

It involves practicing producing sounds, and figuring out which sound you heard.

Phonology

It makes use of the phonetics in order to see how sounds or signs are arranged in a system for each language.

Syntax

It is the study of how phrases, clauses and sentences are constructed and combined in particular languages.

Grammar

Semantics

It is the study of meaning between words and phrases.

Historical Linguistics

It is the study of how languages have changed over time.

Sociolinguistics

It is the study of society and language and the correlation that exists between them.

Morphology

It looks at how individual words are formed from morphemes.

It interacts with phonology and syntax.

Discourse Analysis

It looks at bigger chunks of language, texts, conversations, stories, speeches, etc

Pragmatics

It studies how speakers of a language use the language to communicate.

It looks at the relationship between speaker and listener.

Linguistics is the scientific study of language - how it is put together and how it functions.

Language

It's the human system of sounds used to communicate meanings and feelings.
