UGLIES

Theme:
Appearance, Friendship, Society and Class.
Friendship Quote:"Losing your best friend sucks, even if it's only for three months and two days."
Friendship Quote: His eyes narrowed, and for a moment he looked like the old Peris: serious, thoughtful, even a little bit unhappy. "Tally, you made me a promise too."
Conflicts:
Man VS Self:
Tally is dealing with low self-esteem issues, since she hates, her appearance.
Quote: "Shay! Come on. It's just for fun."
"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun."
Quote: There was a certain kind of beauty, a prettiness that everyone could see. Big eyes and full lips like a kid's; smooth, clear skin; symmetrical features; and a thousand other little clues. Somewhere in the backs of their minds, people were always looking for these markers. No one could help seeing them, no matter how they were brought up. A million years of evolution had made it part of the human brain.
Man VS Man:
Tally is facing a dilemma, because Dr.Cable asks her to choose between exposing Shay or stay a ugly for the rest of her life.
Quote: Dr.Cable said, "Don't play games with me, Tally. Your friend Shay will never thank you for it, because you'll never see her again."
Quote: Dr.Cable later said, "You can die ugly, for all care."
Man VS Society:
Tally judges herself for not being as good as the pretties, they’re part of a whole another world.
Setting:
The Future:
About 300 years into the future, after some disaster has taken place.
City:
The city where Tally is born has real clear divisions between the types of people and where they live. There's UglyVille for uglies; New Pretty Town for new pretties, and then there's Special Circumstances, the headquarters for the Specials. The way that the city is organized tells us how the society wants to be: with strict divisions according to the operation.
Wilderness:
"Tally had lived her whole life within the sight of the river. Slow-moving and dignified, it defined the city, marking the boundary between worlds. But she'd never realized that a few kilometres upstream from the dam, the stately band of silver became a snarling monster."

Connections:
1)World/Self: As a teen, I can clearly say low
self-esteem affects a lot of teens; appearance, society, and friendship is a big deal to us teens.
2)World: We often come across situations, where we have to make a difficult choice, between two undesirable choices, just like how Tally had to make a decision between, betraying a close one, or ruining her own life.
3)We are all born in a socio-cultural setting; we all have our own family, identity, community, culture and groups. Exposing an individual to a society outside their culture, will affect the way they see their culture. With reference to how, Tally hates herself, after seeing how an ugly looks, she hates her society (UGLIES), and since she has been exposed to a better world (from her perspective), she now wants to be one of them.
Quote: "Even when she and Peris used to spy on them from the shadows, giggling at all the stupid things the pretties said and did, they couldn't resist staring. There was something magic in their large and perfect eyes, something that made you want to pay attention to whatever they said, to protect them from any danger, to make them happy. They were so... pretty."
Quote: "So what if people look more alike now? It's the only way to make people equal."
