Miigwan - Leadership Characteristics

Cautions

Evidence#1: "After 3 days time, we were gaining on them. Miig was cautions and slow, but he kept us on a path to intercept the two figures"
Page 117

Analysis
This helped Miig because it allowed the group to find out if the people they saw were safe to approach , and if they could help them in anyway. Even though they were wrong about the nature of those people (they worked for the recruiters), in situations like this, trait can help keep you and others safe, as you can be aware of the dangers of certain people or things.

Evidence#2:
"We were two rows back when a man yelled out, "Who's there?" Miig and I exchanged silent looks. It wasn't that we'd been discovered that made us wary, it was that they were confident enough to call out."
Page 120

Analysis
This helped Miig because the fact that he advanced slowly and were aware allowed him and Frenchie to stay safe, and not seem like a threat to others. Even though this situation turned out bad, with Riri ending up dead, this trait can help a lot in situations like this. For example, it can save you from possible dangers, and can potentially save your life, and other's lives.

Connection
I can see this trait in myself, because in my Lumina personality test, my second highest energy was blue. This means that I tend to think about decisions before I make them, taking in account all of the pros and cons. Therefore, being cautions is the natural way that I lead sometimes. An example of this is when we are working in groups at school, whether it is a project or an activity. If I need to make a decision about about, say, how to present our work, I will think about every option, and make the decision based on which will work best. This shows that I am cautious because I don't want to make the wrong decision, and possibly compromise our mark due to that. These things are alike because in the book, Miig also made the best decisions after taking into account all the risks associated with all the options, and chose the one with the least risks. These two are different, because like the last connection, the decisions that Miig had to make in the book were much more important than the ones that I have to make. This is because while I have to make decisions that only involve marks or feedback, he had to make decisions about their survival and well-being.

Interactive

Evidence#1:
Talks with everyone, and shares information about the past, present, and future.

Analysis
This helps Miig because by being involved with people and their daily activities, he can understand many things about them, like their strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, etc. This makes the people of the group look up to him as an effective leader, as they can relate to each other on a personal level. This trait is needed because it can make a leader like Miig, into a friend, not just a person who tells them what to do.

Evidence#2:
" Soon they needed too many bodies, and they turned to history to show them how to best keep us warehouses, how to best position the culling. That's when the new residential schools started growing up from the dirt like poisonous brick mushrooms"
Page 89

Analysis:
This helps Miig because by telling the story of how and why they are on the run, everybody can be more informed about the situation that they are currently in. This shows everyone that they have a common past, which helps them work together and with dedication. In situations like this, being interactive is needed because it allows you to share information about anything you need to. Also, it allows the others to be more comfortable talking with you, and sharing concerns.

Aware

Evidence #1:
"Tomorrow we turn east, northeast. For a bit, anyway. There might be more people up that way. Seems like the forest fires are in the west"
Page 109

Analysis
This helped Miig because it allowed the group to make an informed decision about which direction to travel in, on his awareness about current situations around them. In Situations like this, this trait is needed because if you are not aware, you can make uninformed decisions, which can lead to endangering you and those around you.

Evidence #2:
"None of us were happy. We wanted to stay at the lodge. It was warm and had walls and made us feel less in danger, less chased. Maybe that's why he wanted us gone so quickly, before we lost the wall and instrict to keep moving altogether"
Page 92

Analysis
This quotation shows that Miig wants the group to keep moving, and not stay in the abandoned resort for too long. This helps Miig because it ensures that the group doesn't get too comfortable with staying in one place, as that can get the killed in the situations that they are in. In situations like this, this trait is needed because it keeps the group sharp, and doesn't let them slack off. If you were not aware of the situation around you and let them slack off, you could have put yourself and your people in danger.

Connection
I can connect this to Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. This is because in November of 2017, he banned all 500 and 1000 rupee notes, in attempt to significantly reduce possession of "black money", or illegal money. This shows he is aware because it shows that he is aware of situations around him. Black money is a big problem in India, and the fact that the Prime Minister has realized that shows that his awareness as a leader is very good. Even though this action has caused some controversy, the Prime Minister's awareness has eliminated a very large amount of black money in India. This is similar to Miig's actions because in the book, Miig makes his decisions based on the situation around him, and is always in the know about any dangers or opportunities for benefits around him. They are different because in the book, Miig has to take action fast, and it's much harder to evaluate situations around him, while political leadership roles, people don't have to necessarily take action fast. Also, there are a wide variety of sources that can help them judge situations, can take action on them.

Decisive

Evidence #1:
"He cut me off, "let's talk about that upfront here, French. No need to bother anyone.'
Page 97

Analysis:
This helped Miig because has he not done that, Frenchie would immediately tell anyone, and that information would have spread panic and fear into the rest of the group. Since Miig told him to come up front and tell him, it allowed the calm to remain, and the rest of the group would find out later, when they wouldn't get as freaked out. In situations like this, this trait is needed because it can benefit you in fast situations. For example, it allows the group to maintain order, while still sharing important information with people who should have it.

Evidence #2:
"Of the trail now!" He chopped the air with this arm, directing us to scatter left into the trees."
Page 146

Analysis:
This character trait is shown in Miig because he ensures the safety of the group, which he was in the charge of. Had he not forcefully directed them off the path, they all might have been caught by recruiters, who showed up only a short while later. Even though one person was captured, he saved the lives of the other eight people. In situations like this, this trait is needed because it can help save people from getting hurt, or dying.

Connection:
I can see this trait in my mom, who tends to be the leader in our family. He demonstrates this when we have conflicts within the family, as he is the one to quickly and confidently make a decision as to who gets what or who is right. For example, if my sister and I are having an argument about who's turn it is to warm up the milk before we go to sleep, my mom will step in and either tell us who will do it today, or make us find some sort of compromise. This is similar to Miig's decisiveness in the book, as both of them are quick to make decisions about situations, and are confident in their ability to handle the situation with the decision. They are different because in the book, Miig has to make decisions in much tougher situations, which usually involve their survival. My dad on the other hand, only has to make decisions about daily, not so significant things, like where we might go to eat on saturday.
