wanted individuals to help themselves if they were struggling

wanted to reduce taxes and limit govt regulation

thought large central federal govt was dangerous for the economy

Liberal Opposition

cooperated better with organizations like the UN

supported women's and minorities' rights

they value programs that help the poor, elderly, unemployed, and minorities

liberals preferred federal govt intervention to stop issues

Reagan's popularity

Republicans attacked the busing technique that many Americans, even in the North, did not approve of

as Americans moved to the suburbs, their want for liberalism waned

Reagan vs. Carter

Democrats still held the House of Representatives but the Republicans took the Senate

Reagan won overwhelmingly of the electoral college votes

reagan won 50.6% of the popular vote

the election was pretty close up until the week before the election
