The water is disinfected using a multi-barrier including filtration, ozonation, chlorination, and ultraviolet light. The finished water enters a large underground storage reservation where it is mixed with treated groundwater before entering the distribution system.

Region's drinking water is from the Grand River. Water from the Grand River goes through a multi-step treatment process at the Manheim Water Treatment Plant.

About 20 to 25 per cent of Waterloo Region's drinking water is from the Grand River. About 75 to 80 per cent of Waterloo Region's drinking water is groundwater.
Our drinking water comes from two primary natural resources: surface water(think lakes and rivers), and groundwater. Typically, the water flows from intake points to a water treatment facility and then through our public water systems into our homes.
