Pragmatic Dreamer

Moonshot idea

I would like to create my own class app. An app that fits in exactly with my needs as a teacher. Something that allows communication, homework submission, provides access to project menu options, and allows collaboration between students both within my classroom and outside of our class as well.

Goal is to go totally paperless and have all off my classes 1 to 1 in terms of technology. Probably some sort of tablet and flip my classroom. While I do not think a flipped classroom is the solution to all of education I do think that in my current position flipping my classroom would allow for more project time in class and increased communication and collaboration outside of class.

Find a tool like evernote, asana, or perhaps even google keep to track key articles and ideas. Master the use of that tool both for productivity and as means to record and track tech options for my use as the teacher or

Create a reading list of education books: read two every summer selecting those which seem most pertinent at the time.

Create learning network using feedly, twitter, and google +

Every week tag, save, link, or print out pertinent or useful articles for use later

2017-18

Create a growth plan for each student that includes helping them develop a leadership skills network using twitter, google plus, blog sites, and having students write about their experiences in leadership in either a shared google doc or a blog.

Teach students about developing an online presence. Create an ASB online presence that is accessible for students of the entire school and beyond as a means of advertising.

Go entirely paperless in class using the google suite

Develop class website

Possibly using moodle

Class website would have connection to fully collaborative options- currently this is not allowed at my school. No collaborative technology may be used online for classes without express consent for EACH usage.

Have at least 5 ipads or other tablets for use in class

2016-17

Involve my students in the planning process of class on a day to day basis. Let them help develop how our accountability will work for group and class projects. Perhaps even having them create a group document regarding accountability

Give students the chance to direct our learning for the year. Use a google form to ask them what they want to learn. Leave it open all year as a source of feedback from students that is safe and allows them an easy way to help direct learning

Develop a collection of web tools for my class and train students on how to use them. Guidebook (make phone apps), piktochart, mindomo, animoto, movie maker, imovie,and powtoon.

Develop my own standards for leadership (skills based- collaboration, public speaking, conflict management, etc.)

The classroom would be completely mobile. I could change the setup at any time easily to fit the needs of our class for the day. Tables would have wheels. TVs would be adjustable.

Bringing the innovators mindset

Finding the problems- I loved reading about seeing the problems because my students and I in ASB live this out everyday. We have to look at more than how to decorate on a budget. We also have to see and anticipate what could go wrong if we have our Prom on a boat. The practice has really stretched me as a teacher (what are the problems with this lesson?) as well as stretching my students.

As far as I can tell there is no simple way to be an innovator in the classroom. The bottom line is that We have to spend time looking for the problems. Of all the things in this class that has stuck with me it is this one. My current position has very much stretched me as a teacher. I went from teaching AP gov and economics to teaching ASB leadership and a whole slew of other things. I have no set curriculum and do not even have a set of standards I must adhere to in the teaching of my class. My job is to teach my ASB to serve the school and guide them through the process. I found it so frustrating at first because I had no content to fall back on and I am not an event planner. What has happened for me in my second year in this position is that I am now learning how to lead while teaching my students how to lead. We are all learning how to be better at the same time and it has sparked some amazing growth in my students.

Teacher role

Relevance in education is in my opinion the key to engagement. If we cannot educate students on things relevant to their lives or present them with the chance to at least connect it to their lives then why on earth would we expect students to find it interesting?

Life-long learner- I am not only a teacher but also a coach. Coaching has taught me a great deal about teaching because it is a very similar skill set and mentality. One of the things that always stood out to me was the idea of continuing to learn. I remember this anecdote about coach Paterno. At age 80 he met with and visited multiple schools learning about I-backs veer. The idea was that he was never satisfied that he knew everything. As a teacher I want to be the same way. My only fear is in direction. It is too easy to fall to best practices and create a "formula" for teaching in the classroom.

I am struggling with the idea of the teachers role. Reading through the three articles has affirmed several things I believe but also brought me many different questions about education.
