Spelling conventions - the "rules" of spelling.
Placeholding - using some letters, usually consonants, to represent the whole word, eg, bcs for because. This is because the child is not sure of the correct spelling.
Phonetic spelling - spelling as the word sounds
Lineality - learning that we write in horizontal lines
High Frequency Word - one that is used often in writing
Directionality - in English we write from left to right
Digraph - a unit of two letters that represents one sound
Encoding - using symbols to express meaning.
Decoding - understanding the meaning carried by symbols
Descender - the part of some letters which goes down from the line.
Ascender - the part of some letters which goes up from the line.
