Criticism

Monolithicity

Cases such as Autistic Savants disband the theory of repetition showing ability to remember precise figures from LTM

It is thought that the memory cannot be split into three definitive stores

Some studies have shown a limitation in the LTM capacity

Linearity

Does not explain cases where the STM is impared but the LTM is not as information must be able to pass through the STM first

Does not pattern with the neurological explanations of where the memory is stored

Does not accomodate the subdivisions of STM and LTM

Agued that the MS model is way too linear

Long Term Memory

Recieves from STM via repetition and rehearsal

Can also recieve from Sensory Memory but unusual

Encoded in terms of meaning (semantic memory)

Also retains procedural skills and imagery

Can last from minutes to an infinite amount of time

Limitless capacity

Provides Lasting Retention of memory

Short-term Memory

"Miller" suggests that the STM can hold up to 7(+/-2) chunks of information

Typically lasts 15-30 seconds unless people rehearse it

Retains information long enough for us to use it

Information is taken from sensory memory

Sensory Memory (The Sense Organs One Second Memory)

Echoic Memory (Audio)

Provides "Auditory Stimuli"

Iconic Memory (Visual)

No meaning to images
