Comparing immigrant experiences

Comparing immigrant experiences

Comparing immigrant experiences

Then(1850-1914) Differences

The Irish were the only ones to mostly settle in the maritimes, compared to the other four immigrant groups. Mostly, because the maritimes offered better land to farm on, and Irish people do love their potatoes.
Immigration restriction
Out of the 5 'Then' immigrant groups, Russians were the only immigrant group to have limited immigration due to the strict immigration laws in Canada. Which led to only a few Russians to immigrate to Canada.
Racism
Out of my 'Top 5, then' immigrant groups, Russians were the only ones to receive racism. Which may have been hard on the Russians as most of them did not know English and Canadians were making fun of them. And this could be seen as a bad or good thing, but the Russians may not have even realized that they were being made fun of.
Time immagrated
I noticed how all the 'Then' immigrant groups immigrated somewhere int he 1800's. Every group except the Greeks. They immigrated in the 1900's

Then(1850-1914) Simillarties

Both the Greek and Japanese immigrants mostly settled in Vancouver. Greeks settled in Vancouver because it was an urban area. The Japanese immigrants mostly settled in Vancouver because it was near the Pacific ocean.
Discrimination
All the 'Then' immigrant groups faced some sort of discrimination by Canadians when they immigrated their. The only 'Then' immigrant group to not receive any discrimination were the Greek immigrants. This just shows how life was much harder for people who were different back then.
Economy
Both Irish and Greek immigrants, immigrated to Canada because both their home countries (Ireland and Greece) had poor economy at the end. But why are Greece's and Ireland's economy poor whilst Canada has a good economy?
Jobs
Japanese and Greek immigrants found it difficult to find a well paying job in Canada, since most of them were unskilled or didn't fit the criteria for most jobs.

Why I chose these people as my 'top 5' slideshows (Boys)

Tristan
I chose Tristan's slideshow, because the immigrant groups he chose to research on are the Hungarians and Haitians. And I have no idea who these immigrant groups are or where they originally came from. So my curiosity led me to choose Tristan as one of my 'top five'.
Labeeque
I chose Labeeque's slideshow, because one of the immigrant groups Labeeque chose to research on are Egyptians. And I know little to nothing about Egyptians so I saw this as an opportunity to learn more about Egyptians.

Now(2010-2020) Differences

Challenges
Haitians were my only 'Now' immigrant group to not face any major challenges when they immigrated to Canada. Most Haitians only immigrated to Canada for a safer life.
Language
Haitians were the only immigrant group (out of the other 4) to speak french and settle in Quebec. The most of other immigrant groups came to Canada without knowing English or French.
Reasons to immagarte
The Syrians, Egyptians, Indians, and Haitians all immigrated to Canada for 2 or 3 reasons, but the Pakistani immigrants had many reasons. A few of those reasons being, Pakistan having a poor economy and healthcare system, pollution, slavery, and the common natural disasters in Pakistan.
Transportation
Syrians were the only immigrant groups to be transported to Canada personally by air crafts the Canadians government sent to Syria, compared to the other 4 immigrant groups.

Now(2010-2020) Similarities

Whether
India's and Egypt's climate is usually hot and warm, whilst Canada's climate is much more colder. So when the Egyptian and Indian immigrants arrived at Canada, most of them immediately got sick and caught colds as they were not use to the harsh and cold climate of Canada.
Safety
Syria and Haiti were both pretty dangerous countries to live in. The quality of life in Syria was is very low, and Syria is well known to have a high crime rate. Haiti was also ranked to have a high crime rate. Thus why Syrians and Haitians both immigrated to Canada for a safer life.
Culture
As the time moves forward, more and more immigrants from different parts of the world are being accepted to immigrate to different places. Though that those create problems for people with very different cultures and languages compared to other people. Indians, Syrians, and Egyptians all immigrated to Canada, but they all has a very different culture compared to Canada's culture.
Settlement place
I noticed how 3 of the 'Now' immigrant groups, mostly settled in Ontario. The 3 groups being, Syrian, Pakistani, and the Indian immigrants. I wonder what drove these immigrant groups to settle in Ontario and not other places like Quebec or Alberta.

Why I chose these people as my 'top 5' slideshows (Girls)

Mariha
I chose Mariha's slideshow, because one of the immigrant groups she chose to do her research on are Pakistani immigrants. Both my parents originally came from Pakistan and immigrated to Canada. So I saw this as an opportunity to learn more about the life my parents might have lived when they were younger. Quite a few of my cousins actually live in Pakistan.
Noya
I chose Noya's slideshow, because one of the immigrant groups she chose to research on are Irish people, and for my research I chose Italians. Italy and Ireland are pretty close together so I was curious if Irish people immigrated for the same or similar reason Italians did.
Malak
I chose Malak's slideshow, because the immigrant group she did for her, "Now" are Syrians. And I did a project on the country Syria once, so I already have a somewhat understanding on why Syrians would immigrate to Canada.
