Types of Research

Experimental: the only one that shows cause and effect.
placebo effect
experimental bias
random assignment
Correlational: studys real behavior, can determine the strength of a relationship, is useful when variables can't be manipulated
two types: positive, and negative
Descriptive:
observes & records what is happening

survey: asks for opinion on things, downside is that results can be false

naturalistic observation: watches subject in natural state

case study: one situation or person in depth

APA ethical guidelines

IRB: international

Hindsight Bias: the tendency to believe after learning the outcome, that we knew all along

Barnum Effect: tendency to accept a vague characterization of ones self

Vocab:

Sampling: identify the population intended to study- the sample must represent that
Hypothesis: expresses a relationship between variables

Research methods

Basic: explores questions you may be curious about, but wont really use immediately.
Applied:Has a clear, practical application that can be readily used
