Métis people

Where they lived

Métis people lived all around Canada! If you were an early settler that married a unit person you would be metis. They are all around Canada because early settlers and Indigenious people live in other parts of Canada.

Shelter

There could be up to 40 people living in a longhouse!

There are two stories to the longhouse. The second story was used for people to sleep in. They are people who lived together.

Longhouses had a fire pit in the center of the house. It was used for keeping people inside warm. There hole to let the smoke out.

Food

Some Métis people hunt bison.

they hunted birds and other small animals.

The Métis also gathered wild berries and edible plants. Berries were important food for the Métis. They were eaten alone, or added to a popular meal called ‘Pemmican’. Berries were stored in animal skins to prevent them from going bad.

They hunted animals like Plains buffalo, Mule deer, Moose, Pronghorn antelope, Prairie bush rabbit, Elk, Prairie chicken, Sage grouse, Duck and Geese.

Tools

Métis people used mauls to make wedges in cedar bark to build the longhouse.

They usually used buffalo bones to make knives, pipes, arrowheads, shovels and clubs. They mostly used used buffalo horns to make arrows, spoons, powder, horns and ladles

clothing

The Métis were fur traders so they had lots of fur and hide to keep them warm in the winter.

They wear a lot of animal skin, hide, and fur.

They also wear dresses with aprons on them.
