- Does a timeline of evidence show that people are more concerned about this issue or less concerned about this issue?
- In recent years, this has started to change and Indigenous Peoples have achieved increasing recognition for the vital role played by their world views, values, knowledge and, above all, customary laws and governance systems in ensuring the sustainable use and management of their land, territories and resources. Indigenous people are helping the fight against climate change.
- What evidence is provided to support this issue as a social justice issue?
- People are being killed, animal and plants are dying, fires are burning them, it's a health threat from the smoke of the fire to the Indigenous people. It produces a “flying river” of water vapour that distributes rain across South America and impacts weather in other continents. If deforestation continues, the entire rain forest will hit an irreversible tipping point. The surviving forest would no longer be able to produce its own rainfall and quickly transform into an arid savannah – killing off species and releasing massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.
- What does a growing or declining trend tell you about the issue under investigation?
- Declining trend of forest life shows that the problem is not ending - One concerning trend found was that gross deforestation in Indigenous Territories without legal recognition increased more than 50% from 976 km2 in the 2000-05 period to 1,501 km2 in the 2010-15 period. Lands with title to them are known to reduce the prevalence of deforestation. This is concerning because of the lack of progress titling Indigenous Territories in the region and more recent backsliding in the key country of Brazil.

- Greenpeace, Amazon sustainability foundation, IWGIA are all organizations that are addressing deforestation.

- The 3 organizations focus on different matters. Greenpeace focuses on environmental issues- focuses on protests. IWGIA focuses on Indigenous affairs- promotes their rights. And Amazon Sustainability Foundation focuses on improving quality of riverside communities, conservation, and sustainable development.
