Biodiversity in Mexico
Conservation
Sustainable use of resources
Restore ecosystems
deteriorated
Establish protected natural areas
Importance
It provides benefits to society at the level of medicine, agriculture, provision of goods and ecosystem services.
The importance is linked to the way in which the three levels are interrelated
of biodiversity (genetics, species and ecosystems).
Threats
Loss of genetic diversity and consequently of the gene pool due to deforestation, fragmentation of natural ecosystems, degradation of ecosystems.
Loss of species diversity due to changes in land use, deforestation, overexploitation of biotic resources and environmental degradation.
Human activities negatively impact biodiversity at all levels.
Levels
Ecosystem diversity
Example: the distribution of ecosystems throughout the national territory.
It gives heterogeneity to the landscapes.
It can be seen at the level of landscape, territory, region or country.
Species diversity
Example: species diversity in northeastern Mexico.
It is the number of different species in the biosphere or in a particular area.
It expresses the richness or number of species in
an ecosystem, region or country.
Diversity of genetics
Example: the diversity of races in dogs.
Provides structural support to ecosystems
It is observed within the species.
Genetic variation among organisms of the same species.
