CAUSES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Fance wanted to recover Alsace-Lorraine, that they had lost to the German Empire in 1871.
Industrialised European countries expanded their empires and competed for having more territories.
They had colonies especially in North Africa.
Between 1878 and 1908, the Austro-Hungarian Empire occupied and annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina; this led to nationalists protests.
On 28th June 1914, the heir of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated by a Serbian gunman.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. With this war started the First World War.
Britain and Germany became involved in a naval arms race.
As a result of these disputes, two alliances were established.
