Literature Circles
What are the benefits of this
literacy strategy?
Reading through different lenses gives students the opportunity to consider many perspectives and points of view
Collaborative - students are constantly sharing and building on each others thoughts and opinions
How do you assess the students?
Have the students self-assess as well
Ongoing observations of:
-articulation of ideas
-teamwork
-building new understanding
What is the teacher's role?
Puts together a thoughtful
selection of texts for students
to choose from
Models the different roles
that the students eventually
own (ex. Facilitator, Questioner,
Word Wizard, Connector)
Ongoing assessment
Continually challenge students to deepen their critical literacy skills
What prior knowledge do students have to have?
Students must know about Accountable Talk. (appropriate and meaningful forms of discussion)
Students have learned about the different roles they must play in the literature circle and understand the roles are often blended
What do they look like?
Students converse about a
shared text they have read
Groups of 4-6 students
Each group member has their own focus/role
